History
The former home of William and Lena Albrecht, this historic brick mansion was built in the 1930s. The Albrechts earned their fortune in the paper business, owning the Western Tablet Company, a St. Joseph small business that grew into a national brand called Westab and eventually a subsidiary of the Mead Corporation. The descendants of the Albrecht family dedicated the building in 1966 to become an art museum and joined with a Women's Art Guild to provide arts education to the St. Joseph community. Flower gardens, including a waterfall with a pond, pay homage to Mrs. Albrecht's expertise and love of gardening.
The museum expanded in the 1990s thanks to ongoing support by the Kemper Family Foundation to include contemporary gallery spaces, an art classroom, sustainable solar panels, and upgraded art storage facilities. Today, the museum hosts 12+ temporary exhibitions per year and boasts a collection of over 3,000 fine art works.
Additional support provided by the St. Joseph Visitor's Bureau.
