In the spring of 1924, in eastern North Carolina, a man with a dream set out to produce a hard candy such as the world had never tasted. A boiled concoction of fruit nectar with an added wedge of coconut produced the first Peach Buds. At Butterfields, we take simple yet honest pride in doing things the old-fashioned way. All our candies are cooked slowly in copper kettles, and the flavor is hand-blended in to create the ultimate experience. It takes more time, but our consumers are guaranteed a confection of consistently high quality with unparalleled natural savor.
12 years ago Dena Manning, and her son, Harry Manning took over Butterfield' Candy. They saved the legacy of this treasured confection from disappearing forever. Now, 2024 and Butterfield's Candy is celebrating 100 years. We are still a small family business, we still make every single batch by hand, in copper kettles, over a open fire.
We insist on two qualities: authenticity in both flavor and scent recognition. Our candies taste and smell as if you are standing in the middle of an orchard. We must have made a mistake because they don’t taste like candies—they taste like the fruit! Peach, Key Lime, Lemon, Honeybell Orange, Cherry, and Old-Fashioned Christmas Candy are part of our lineup of fine confections. Look for more flavors to burst out of buds soon!

Hi, I'm Lindsey and I have always had a passion for Sales and Marketing. When I first started dating Harry Manning, I didn't believe he and his mom, Dena Manning ran a candy factory. I insisted on going to work with him on a day off to check out the operation. I was beyond impressed with their operation and saw so much potential and insisted on helping where I could. I kept showing up to work with Harry till eventually I weaseled my way into the family business. We now have a small team that works with us, and we get to work alongside each other every day. It truly is a dream come true and as my friend’s joke, I'm Mrs. Willy Wonka now.
I am Dena Manning, I can tell you that the passion for this candy began at the time my mother first discovered Lemon Buds back in the early 90’s when we happened upon these delicious, uniquely flavorful candies and fell in love. We both thought they were a European brand and were so pleased to find out there were made right here in North Carolina.
I come from a long line of adventurers and pioneers in my family. My father and grandfather were pioneers in the airline business during the 40’s and 60’s. My passion for business and pioneering has always been with me and now the passion for candy making has fulfilled both for me. I am enchanted each time a new batch of the little gems come rolling off the conveyor belt. From a boiling pot of sugar to these bright, jewellike candies, the process still amazes me – like diamonds forming from a boiling eruption.

Harry Manning has been in the candy business with his mom, Dena Manning, for 12 years now after bringing Butterfield's Candy back to life. Butterfield's is now 100 years old thanks to the Manning's stepping in to continue its legacy. Harry, along with his partner, Lindsey, help Dena run the behind-the-scenes operations.
