About

Located in the heart of Georgetown at the intersection of M Street and Wisconsin Avenue, the City Tavern has been long been a center of activity in the city. Originally constructed in 1796, the City Tavern functioned as both an inn and a major hub of civic life in the area during the early Federal period. George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and other Founding Fathers frequented the Tavern during this time. On June 6, 1800, President John Adams was honored at a banquet in the Long Room of the Tavern where he offered the toast, “Georgetown- May its prosperity equal the ardent enterprise of its inhabitants, and the felicity of their situation.” Throughout the 19th century, the Tavern changed hands many times and was known by many names until it was converted for retail use in 1898. By 1960, the building had fallen into severe disrepair and was scheduled for demolition to make way for a parking lot. A group of Georgetowners happened upon the Tavern and recognized the Federal period architecture. They realized that the building was a landmark of significant historical value. The City Tavern Association was formed to restore the old tavern and preserve its authenticity and the building was reopened in 1962 as a private social club. Today the City Tavern continues the traditions set forth by the Founding Fathers and is a second home to many distinguished members of Washington’s political and social elite. The clubhouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and the City Tavern Club operates as a nonprofit organization with the mission of preserving one of the oldest Federal period buildings and the sole remaining founding-era tavern in Washington, D.C.

Charming and historic wedding venue

Aki and the entire city tavern club team are the best of the best. They made our wedding planning experience seamless and not stressful at all. I loved the historic charm of the location. They were so kind to the rest of my vendors, flexible with our wedding timeline and thoughtful with every detail we chose. It was such an incredible day and the City Tavern team made us feel so welcome and at ease. I would recommend using their space for future events too. Our families loved the location and our out of town guests got the full DC experience. We couldn’t have been happier with our choice to have our wedding there!

CTC made our dream wedding possible!

City Tavern Club was such an amazing venue and had such amazing food and service that words cannot do it justice. The team was extremely detail oriented and provided great advice and guidance while also listening to and implementing our ideas! The space is also simply beautiful with so much historic significance. I would recommend CTC to anyone and everyone!

Classic and beautiful venue and delicious food

My now husband and I had our small wedding reception at CTC with 18 guests. It was the perfect venue for this size or really for many other sizes as CTC has different room offerings. Carrie the club manager helped us tremendously as the event planner was leaving her position. We loved the food, drinks, room setup, and bartender and servers. I especially enjoyed the crab dip and salmon with cream sauce. I don’t have any complaints. I’m surprised there aren’t more reviews of weddings here as it is a great venue in a wonderful location!
