History

Originally constructed in 1906, Huron Substation is a stunning landmark. For many years, the building served downtown LA's Yellow Car system. In the 1960s, the city abandoned the streetcar system, and the space was used for various purposes, like a welding shop and a manufacturing plant. A fire in the 1980s left a beautiful black patina across the walls. Today, this location has been used in various production types, such as movies, music videos, and television shows.

I had my wedding here in May and it was everything I had envisioned. Meike, the owner, is very nice and helpful. She made us feel welcome during our open house and did a fantastic job site repping the day of our wedding. I work in the wedding industry and would pick Huron again just to work with Meike.

One of the major perks is that you can bring in outside vendors (nothing is contracted directly through the venue). My husband works for a brewery so they brought in all of our beer, our own caterer, DJ, etc. Huron is perfect for someone who is looking to make their wedding truly their own. I liked being able to tailor my wedding exactly to our taste.

The interior is stunning - like breathtaking. I was hook line and sinker just walking in. Huron has beautiful high ceilings that looked amazing with our lighting, beautiful exposed brick that gives it an artsy charm. The back patio is strewn with bistro lights that bring a warm ambience well into the evening. Even the front has a quirky little chicken coop that looked great in our pictures. I am STILL getting compliments on how beautiful and unique our venue was.

A couple things to address based on other negative reviews I've seen: Rose is no longer with Huron. I worked directly with Meike and Patricia - both are nothing short of exceptional. Great communication, friendly, and professional.

As for the heat, I got married in May (I think the temp was high 80s that day) and as the girl in the fluffy wedding gown it is not THAT bad. It will honestly not break your experience here. Several reviews whine about how Huron doesn't have AC and if that's going to be a deal breaker then your better off having a sub zero hotel wedding. It's an indoor/outdoor space with plenty of breeze way. We didn't mind the temperature and neither did our guests.

Overall, unique venue (great for someone looking for something similar to Marvimon), excellent value, exquisite. I cannot say enough good things about this place.

The Huron Substation was the perfect spot for us—a loft-like space with modern and historic touches, and just enough of it's own character that it wouldn't require breaking the bank to transform it for our big day. Quirky elements like the chickens out front with their mini-Airstream only made it that much more endearing. Our wedding wasn't huge so the size of the Substation was ideal. It's an intimate space that feels vast because of the high ceilings and the flow from the indoor to outdoor spaces. Every one of our guests fell in love with this place. Needless to say...so did we.

My husband finally found Huron after an exhausting search of overpriced, tacky venues with impersonal staff. We were really looking for a funky venue that would allow us to do much of the work ourselves but provide a nice canvas. When we walked into Huron we knew it was the place immediately! The characteristics of this place fit our personal style right on. It was vintage, historical, but modern at the same time. They have an awesome new chandelier and a giant projector with a screen. The backyard area is perfectly designed so we didn’t even have to decorate it at all. Everything is kept so nicely. Meike was super personable and offered us a “no BS” intro to the Substation and its policies. She had so many great suggestions and really listened to what we wanted to do there. We liked Meike’s personal attention and she made us feel confident that things would work out when we were feeling stressed. Though Meike is not a wedding planner, she really focused on any issues that came up regarding the space and connecting with vendors that were being a pain. She had great communication skills and was so helpful with questions and concerns. The day of the event went great with the help of TACT, the site rep company. We were able to access the space at noon to get everything set up. We wound up getting rental furniture and bringing some things from home. Otherwise, the space really speaks for itself. We got so many compliments on the space and how comforting and fun it was. We are constantly having people tell us what an amazing space it was and asking for Meike’s contact information. We feel so connected to that experience every time we go over the photos. It really felt like we had an event authentic to our style and relationship. My husband and I definitely recommend the Substation for any event. It really helped make this night the best of our lives.
