About

On WeddingWire since 2021

I’m Deborah Whitebird-Griffith, I own and operate The Magnolia Venue & Urban Garden. The Magnolia is located in downtown Kansas City across from city market. I’m a southern girl, with a passion for interior design, cooking, and event planning. I found my passion for event planning more than twenty years ago when I hosted a couple’s shower in my home in Guthrie, Oklahoma. After moving to Kansas City, I continued my passion for event planning (weddings are my favorite). I love staying in step with design trends, seeing what is coming, and what will stand the test of time. I was fortunate to design our low country style home which has been featured in several local magazines. My vision for the venue has been to create a backdrop that has its own design style, but also allows each client to inject their own personal touches. My motto has always been “Life is too short to be like everyone else, each one of us is unique in our own way, why not make your event match who you are or who you want to be”.

Clients often ask about the Venue name and how it came to be. While living in Oklahoma a forty-year-old Magnolia Tree sat right next to my front porch. Each day started and ended on my porch watching the Magnolia Tree change. The Magnolia is a strong and beautiful tree, but it takes its time to grow. I believe that everything comes in its own time and we must be patient as there is a plan for each one of us. I always knew I would use Magnolia as my business name, it just took a few years to make it happen. Never give up on your dreams, and always have a grateful heart.

I’m a proud American Indian from the Cheyenne & Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma. I believe I get my creativity and love for design from my family. Many of my family members are talented painters, jewelers, dancers and beadwork artists.

Magical Venue and Amazing Wedding Planning Team

When we first started planning our wedding there were only a few places we had lined up to look at, one of them being Magnolia Venue and Urban Garden. However, when we went and met Deb (the owner) we knew right away that it was the venue for us. Right, when you walk in it is warm and inviting, with the beautiful crystal chandeliers throughout and mix of industrial brick.

We quickly booked, and Deb met with us shortly after that, despite being over a year and a half away, and started to help us with the overwhelming process of planning our wedding. It was then that she offered her and her team, High Cotton Events, wedding planning services. After hearing what all that entailed and seeing some of their previous beautifully decorated and executed weddings, we decided to do the full planning experience. We are so glad that we did because Deb and her team were invaluable throughout the wedding planning process.

Deb and M’Khila (our wedding planner) helped us figure out some of the larger decisions, all the while reassuring us when we didn’t know what to do. We found that instead of being handed a list of who our vendors would be, we were able to bring in vendors and they gave us options of great vendors that they had worked with in the past that met our particular style. Deb then offered her florist services, and the results were a romantic dream. Throughout the process, we learned that their team did more than just the planning, setup, breakdown, decorating, and so on- they also gave us peace of mind to just live in the moment of our day. A week before the wedding when I was starting to feel overwhelmed with jobs I had “given myself”, M’Khila (despite having multiple events and moving) took care of wedding favors, place settings, and a ring bearer sign, without even asking.

Our ceremony was held outside in a heated tent that was straight out of my dreams with greenery draped throughout, twinkling fairy lights, flickering candles, and evergreen trees. It was truly magical. My reception was everything I asked for (and believe me I asked a lot) with beautiful jewel tones, glowing crystal, romantic flowers (done by Deb), and greenery throughout the space. The outcome was just stunning.

I was so thankful that I was able to enjoy the time with my family, the laughter with my friends and the love that I shared with my husband on that day. I would recommend this beautiful venue and the amazing wedding planner team to create the most important day of your life. You won’t regret it.
