Legit artist whose medium is cake
I'm getting married in Sausalito in 8 months, and a good marriage requires a good cake. I found Revelry Cakes on Yelp while looking up local bakeries, and after many months of stalking this business page, I finally booked a cake tasting.
CAKE TASTING! What a magical freaking concept. I don't have much experience in cake tastings, this being my first and, pending the success of my marriage, possibly last. I had no expectations going in, but I feel like this tasting really set the bar high. I'll break it down.
Scheduling, Communication, Flexibility: 5 Stars
Kirstin Pearson runs Revelry Cakes, and she sent immediate responses from my first emailed communication with her months back. She made scheduling a cake walk (forgive me). The night before our tasting, my fiance's work schedule changed, so I emailed Kirstin in a panic asking if we could push back our appointment by a couple hours. Again, she replied immediately and made rescheduling a piece of cake (please, forgive me). An hour before our tasting, my fiance called to get the address and was able to reach her immediately. Responsiveness is a rare and beautiful thing where wedding planning is concerned, and I like knowing that I can easily reach her in case of a wedding emergency.
Parking: 5 Stars
The parking situation may depend on the time of week and day. I showed up around 4:30pm on a Thursday, and there were several open spots on the street out front. Parking was also free, which is a pleasant surprise in Sausalito.
Location & Atmosphere: 5 Stars
If this place hasn't been featured in a magazine somewhere, it should be. Gorgeously decorated interior straight out of Better Homes & Gardens? Check. Enormous windows with sweeping views of the Bay that will make you rethink what you've done with your life to land in a rented apartment instead of a place like this? Check. Cute little dog who looks like Albert Einstein if he were part Chihuahua? Check. Beautiful, handcrafted flowers and cake designs created by Kirstin that show she is the Michaelangelo of the cake world? Freaking check.
Customer Service: 5 Stars
Kirstin is friendly, talented, and she made the occasion both comfortable and special.
Cake Quality: 5 Stars
Well, we booked her and won't be looking anywhere else, if that says anything. I knew we'd book her after the first bite. When you schedule the tasting, you get to choose 4 flavors to try. You can pick any of the flavors from the website, and you can request any custom flavors you'd like. We chose vanilla Bourbon, vanilla blackberry, chocolate Manhattan, and a custom request: Waldorf Astoria's red cake. She put them in order from lightest to richest to preserve our palettes. The samples were gorgeous; they were baked, iced, and garnished perfectly. We especially loved the vanilla cake with blackberry compote and the chocolate Manhattan. A quick word about flavor options. Kirstin created the chocolate Manhattan for a friend who liked Manhattans, and I've never had anything like it. The cake was rich, complex, fruity, a little boozy... I will definitely be buying that cake in the future. If that is what she can make based on someone liking Manhattans, the sky is the limit on your custom flavor requests. I am kicking myself for requesting Waldorf Astoria's red cake instead of asking for... Idk... something that tastes like a Dirty Shirley... or a rainy night in Hawaii. If you schedule a tasting and request a custom flavor, don't be boring like me; be creative.
Overall: 5 Stars
Kirstin made the entire process simple; this is the least work I've had to do for anything wedding-related so far. Scheduling, booking a date, working out delivery, working out the payment, deciding how the cake will look... everything was easy as pie (last one, I promise). I will post an updated review after the big day when we have professional photos of her work. So far, I can't recommend Revelry Cakes enough; in fact, I'm having cake sample leftovers for breakfast this morning.
