What is Up Lighting?

Simply put, up lighting is a lighting fixture that is placed on the ground and shines towards the ceiling.

This effect can be achieved with a wide variety of lighting fixtures. Each fixture is an up light, but they are not all the same. Differences involve the light source (LED or Bulb), spread of the light (wash or "cone"), how brights (lumens) and how does the color mix. Other differences are how the fixture gets it's power (plug or battery) and if the light is a plug and play or "smart" (DMX or Wireless). Below describes the majority of fixtures that are commonly used.

Tri-Colored LED Battery Powered, Wireless Lighting Fixture

This fixture offers many of the best features in an uplight. The tri-colored LED is 3 LEDs in one, allowing the light to be properly mixed from source. LEDs that are not Tri-Colored take about 3 feet to mix. For instance, to achieve a purple color, the first 3 feet would show blues and reds, then purple above 3 feet. The battery powered feature is exceptional because there wouldn't be a need for power cables to be ran and taped throughout the venue. The same goes for the wireless option. In order to change the color on this smart fixture, the lighting specialists only needs to press a button on a remote control. With DMX (wired smart fixtures), there would still be a need for wires throughout the venue. Last, the fixtures that Tampa Up Lighting uses offers a 120 degree spread of light. That means that light will spread out to almost horizontal and flow up the wall. Most lighting fixtures offer a 20-40º beam angle. That beam is what is commonly called a light "cone". Our 120º beam angle is a true wall wash.

LED Lighting Fixtures

This is the most commonly used fixture in the industry. The independent LEDs are used in conjunction to blend and make a color. Older fixtures use dip switches to increase/decrease the Red, Green and Blue LEDs, while the newer fixtures use a digital up/down keypad. Many of the newer LED lights are "smart" fixtures that use DMX, both wired and wireless. These fixtures are most commonly AC powered, while many of the newest fixtures are battery powered. These fixtures have a beam angle of 20-40º.

Incandescent Bulb Fixtures
(Theater Style)

This dated technology offers inexpensive uplighting effects due to the fact that the fixtures are relatively cheap. The disadvantage to this style is that the uplight still uses light bulbs. The 90-120 watt bulbs can get hot. These fixtures (called par cans) are also much larger than the LED counterparts. These are all AC powered and these fixtures can not change colors. A gel is used to get the desired color. The positive point of a gel is that a color match can be achieved, better than the non-DMX LED fixtures. The beam angle of this fixture is almost always 20-30º.

So, what's the difference?

Bottom line, the difference is two things:

  1. Cost
  2. Effect

If you want an inexpensive way to add color to your wedding, then the Theater Style Par Cans is the way to go. You get consistent color from fixture to ceiling, a matched color, and cost savings.

If you want the "High End Wedding" effect, then you would want to go with the Tri-Colored LEDs. This also gives you the consistent color, as well as the ability to change the color, or have a fade between colors throughout the night. The battery option is also a plus so that your room is not covered with power and DMX cables.

At Tampa Up Lighting, we don't recommend the most common fixture - the LED Up Light. Inconsistent color, higher cost and poor aesthetics is the result of this fixture.

VividLite Lighting Fixtures

Tampa Up Lighting has chosen to use the VividLite™ VL2-S and VL3-X fixtures. We believe that this product offers the NEWEST LED UP LIGHTING technology in Tampa. These fixtures are BATTERY POWERED, WIRELESS and yields a massive 120º throw, while evenly spreading the light/color in all directions. This technology allows us to place the small lighting fixture in any location, without requiring any power cables. Furthermore, with the Tri-Colroed LEDs, these fixtures provide consistent color from unit to ceiling.
