Nestled along the scenic Animas River, The Powerhouse is a wedding venue located in the heart of downtown Durango, Colorado. This picturesque riverfront property provides a charming and nostalgic location for couples to celebrate their momentous occasion of love. The historic building dates back to 1893, when it was constructed as a coal-fired alternating current power plant. At the time, AC was still a new energy source, and the Durango Light and Power Company were discouraged from taking on this risky enterprise. However, their daring paid off, and the power plant brought energy, innovation, and jobs to Durango for many years. The plant closed in the 1970s, until it was rescued by the Children’s Museum of Durango in 1999 and reopened as a science center. Today, its Mission-style architecture, the first of its kind outside of California, offers an atmospheric space for couples to wed surrounded by a storied past.

Facilities and Capacity
The Powerhouse has several indoor and outdoor locations for ceremonies and receptions both large and small. The Powerhouse Plaza, draped with string lights and overlooking the Animas River, can accommodate up to 175 guests for dinner and dancing. The terracotta roof, brick patio, and views of the mountains make this a beautiful setting for celebrations of love. This outdoor area also features a wooden bridge that leads over the river that can be used for pictures or making a grand entrance. Indoors, the gallery can host up to 120 guests, and comes with unique exhibits of scientific inquiry. The Boiler Room holds approximately 30 guests and can also be used for more intimate gatherings including ceremonies and cocktail hours.

Rental of The Powerhouse comes with assistance with setup and cleanup, linens, and plenty of parking. The Gallery is also fully equipped with a sound system, which can be used for toasts, music and dancing, and more. For couples’ convenience, a wedding coordinator is available to help plan the memorable event and make sure everything runs smoothly on the big day. Guests can also explore the city of Durango during the wedding weekend, which boasts numerous fine dining restaurants, bars, shopping, and outdoor adventures.
