Duke Chapel was my dream wedding venue. I've been wanting to get married there since I was in 3rd grade. I got married in November so I did not have to camp out, I was able to get my first choice date and time by showing up the day Nov '17 dates opened.

There are a lot of rules but I found most of them easy to work with. The Chapel staff were very easy to communicate with prior to the wedding. The organist has several clips of music online making it easy to choose.

Nancy was my wedding director and she was fabulous. She was friendly, organized, and ensured our wedding ran smoothly. Her assistant was also extremely nice and helpful. I chose vendors who had previously work at the Chapel before so I think that helped a lot.

Originally I wasn't going to have any flowers since the Chapel is already beautiful and large arrangements can be costly. The flowers for Sundays service arrived early and Nancy was so kind to ask if I would like to use them for my ceremony.

Parking can be a bit of a challenge. They give you 30 passes for the front which I handed out to guests, I picked them up a few days early. You can purchase vouchers to cover costs for the parking deck but they are a bit of pain to pick up at the parking office. I had our program attendant hand them out.

Overall, very happy with my decision to get married at the Chapel. I found the price very reasonable for what was included, esp. compared to some of the other ceremony venues/churches in this area.

The Duke Chapel is so gorgeous, and I am so happy that my husband and I could get married there since we're both students at Duke! We got married there on 3/8/2015, and it was even more beautiful than I could've imagined! We worked with Sara Clark, and she is so sweet and helped us so much in planning our ceremony! She explained the chapel's policies well and reassured us that the time limitations wouldn't affect our wedding day at all, and she was right! Leading up to the wedding day, she helped us organize who stood where, how the processional would work for the girls and guys, how to organize the reserved seats, and preparing us for the pause between the bridesmaids' and flower girl's processional and the bride's processional! :) Sara also helped to set up the Chapel for the ceremony! We just dropped off the guestbook, unity candle, programs, etc. at the rehearsal and Sara took care of the set up for us! She was very organized! On the wedding day, she and her assistant Chris were very helpful in making sure everyone was in place and where they needed to be, and the ceremony ran very smoothly (except for our unity candle, which had trouble lighting!), and we didn't have anyone wander off or otherwise get lost! Sara also told us about the Chapel's live streaming service, and it was beautiful and perfect for our guests who couldn't be there in person! Christopher Jacobson was our organist, and he did an excellent job! He played very well, and he helped us a lot in picking our ceremony music! Overall, the Chapel was the perfect wedding ceremony venue! It was beautiful inside and outside, the aisle was breathtaking, and it was perfect for my vision of a princess wedding! Thank you so much Sara and Kit!!

I have always known that I wanted to get married in Duke Chapel, and I finally did in January! :) It is the most beautiful, reverent venue and I would recommend it to anyone that is considering it!

Sara and Blanche were amazingly organized and helpful throughout the planning process! They gave me checklists, reminders, and example programs which was all such a huge help! I cannot thank them enough for all of their support over the last eight months!

The Duke Chapel is SUCH a beautiful place for a wedding ceremony! We loved our ceremony in the Chapel, the Chapel staff was great to work with and paid great attention to every detail. I agree that it is more expensive than other ceremony venues but if your wedding calls for an indoor/chapel ceremony, I would highly recommend the Duke Chapel.

I had been dreaming of being married at Duke Chapel since I was little. This was literally, my dream come true. I couldn't have asked for anything more. The Duke Chapel's beauty speaks for itself.

The Chapel was absolutely stunning and the perfect place to have my wedding. Our coordinator, Blanche, was very helpful over the phone and provided detailed directions during the rehearsal, although she and the officiant seemed to have differing opinions and weren't able to fully resolve their issues. On the day of, she was calm and kept everything running smoothly, which is what really matters. The Chapel itself, while expensive as a venue, was worth every penny with the stunning appearance.

The Duke Chapel is a fairytale wedding venue, and it made my wedding a dream come true. I got married there in March and was thus lucky that spots were actually quite available (although I recognize that this venue is quickly booked in other months)!

Our Wedding Director Blanche was so amazing. She is an incredibly nice woman--I could talk to her forever! She made the rehearsal a breeze with no work needed to be done by us, and she even bonded with my groomsman on our wedding day.

Our organist Jane was perfect--the organ was a big hit, and my husband's love of the organ was a big reason we chose the Chapel. It is really unparalleled in the area.

The one mark I put down above about responsiveness was just concerning the Wedding Coordinator Meredith, who often did not respond to emails. Blanche and Jane were incredibly responsive and pleasures to work with!

I didn't work with Meredith much. Sara was easy and pleasant to work with.

Blanche, our coordinator, was spectacular. She ensured that everything ran smoothly and was a calming presence the day of the wedding. Her assistant Chris was also great.

David Arcus has a true talent and it was wonderful to have him place the organ for us.

I only gave 4 out of 5 stars on flexibility because they do have specific time slots for the ceremony times. Obviously it makes the most sense for them, and everything was wonderful, so it didn't matter too much.

If you have the option to get married here, I'd recommend it. When selecting your other vendors make sure they have worked at the Chapel before -- it's a big help as there are a decent number of rules and policies in place.

The wedding coordinators and organist were fantastic. Every detail was attended to, and it made the planning low-stress and our ceremony exquisite. It is quite expensive to get married in Duke Chapel, but well worth it. Also, you may not get the date you want, but if you are flexible on this, you don't have to camp out for a reservation a year in advance.

Duke University Chapel is by far the most beautiful traditional church/place of worship I have seen in North Carolina (in my humble opinion). While not everyone can get married at the Chapel I knew from the moment I met eligibility criteria to be married here that I would be---and I was single at the time! Fast forward a few years and my Duke-hating fiance proposed by asking me if I had booked the Chapel for our wedding yet. My wedding planner warned me that the Chapel was extremely strict, and she was SO right. There are a million and one rules, and there were many times I considered throwing in the towel and regretted my decision to get married there. I can't even begin to tell you about all the rules, but I will say they're FAR more intense/strict than any other ceremony venue any of my vendors have ever worked with. All that being said, I had my heart set on walking down that beautiful aisle and couldn't think of a more beautiful ceremony location. In the end, despite all the stress, rules, and inconveniences, I had my a fairytale wedding. I am SO glad I persevered and got married in the Chapel, it is truly gorgeous and nearly every one of my guests told me how gorgeous the Chapel and ceremony were. I was lucky enough to have Nancy Freeman as my wedding coordinator, and she was a pleasure to work with; she was patient, kind, calm, and went above and beyond for myself and my vendors the day of the wedding. If you're considering getting married at the Chapel, I would recommend it only if you go into it knowing exactly what all the rules are. It is gorgeous, but for some all the rules and inability to personalize (especially when it comes to music) would outweigh the beauty.

The Duke Chapel is without a doubt the most amazing ceremony venue in North Carolina. There is no dispute there. Walking down the aisle was an incredible feeling in such an amazing space.

There are several people you'll work with at the Chapel: wedding coordinator, wedding director, and organist.

Wedding Coordinator: Meredith. She is very difficult to get a hold of - she does not answer emails or phone calls. She made SEVERAL mistakes in setting up our wedding. If at all possible, I would suggest skipping the emails and calls, and just walk into her basement office at the Chapel.

Wedding Director: Blanche. Amazing. She has been coordinating 3 weddings per Saturday for years, and she has it down to a science. Plus, she is the sweetest woman ever who makes you feel like your wedding is special to her.

Organist: David or Jane. We had Jane. She knows her stuff! She's been playing at the Chapel for over 30 years, and she has such a vast collection in her head, plus will give you suggestions.

Overall, if you're lucky enough to win a spot, definitely do it!

Had there been a 'star' category unrelated to service the rating would have been much, much higher.

What ruins this beautiful venue is the "gatekeeper": The Meredith that the other 5/28/11 bride talks about above. She never responded to my regular gmail account email; it was only when my now-husband emailed her from his duke account with this administration signature on it. I sent several, got nothing. He sent one, got a reply within an hour or so. NOT ACCEPTABLE, especially when someone needs to have a duke connection to even have a wedding there.

Apparently she recently replaced the woman who was giving them a horrible reputation before, though I would argue there haven't been any steps out of the hole and forward. For example, we stressed we really wanted the 6PM ceremony time slot but she told us it was gone. When we met with Blanche in April the 6PM slot was open!! Another example, Meredith told us early on the mid-day and latest rehearsal time slots were available, not the early evening one. So we took the late evening one and worked out a late formal dinner around it... Well we found out in a meeting with Blanche in April she double booked us. After days of waiting she told us that luckily the other bride said she was happy to switch (I'd like to know if that's even true!). Had it not been the case I don't know what we would have done already having sent out formal invitations for the dinner and members of the wedding party already having made work and flying/driving arrangements accordingly. It's just not the additional overhead a couple needs in the month before the wedding. Other cons are that they are very strict (no flower petals, no guaranteed rehearsal parking, a ridiculously long rule packet, wont let you list your own wedding planner alongside theirs in the programs, will kick you out or at least make you feel like your time is done when the end of your slot starts to near (not good on hot days!)), cashed my check over two months after I gave it to them, and obviously the accountability, scheduling and response issues listed above.

I must also say Blanche was very, very sweet but the day of the rehearsal and ceremony she was too pushy and had little patience it seemed. That was an unfortunate way to see her because she was absolutely lovely before then- I mean sweet as can be, emailed us back promptly, helped out tremendously, everything.

HOWEVER, that all said, the chapel is too beautiful though to turn down if you can make it work! It is gorgeous and you will fall in love with the pictures.... I wish they would just realize the things/people that cause undue stress and fix them so that there will one day only be positive things to say!!

I'm not sure the rating scale gives me sufficient options for our experience at the Chapel. The Chapel is not flexible, we had terrible trouble communicating with them, and it's expensive. But our wedding coordinator, once she was finally assigned, was wonderful, and as inflexible as the Chapel seems, she certainly did not put any extra pressure on us. The Chapel is also stunningly beautiful; I can't imagine getting married in a more elegant place. We would do it again in a second.

A couple pieces of advice. First, I thought writing, as the Chapel requests, "Please do not take photographs" was a bit cheeky, but unfortunately, we had a number of guests take pictures and get in the way of our actual photographers, who were bound to follow the rules and stay behind a certain point in the Chapel. Make sure to put in your program that the guests not take pictures!

Also, the timetable at the Chapel is very very tight, and I'm not sure we got all the pictures we wanted.

Blanche Williams is not fun to work with. The Chapel's policies aren't that bad, though. Just be prepared to be assertive if you get her as your wedding director. Or you could always get in touch with her boss, The Reverend Luke Powery at Luke.powery@duke.edu if she makes you as mad as she made me ;)
