I can't recommend Thatch enough as your wedding venue! Barrie and the team are so helpful and exactly who you want making your wedding dreams come true. I loved that you could have the ceremony and reception all right there under the gorgeous bistro lights. There is even a little bridal suite and area for the groomsmen all to get ready there. Plus you can enjoy this beautiful secluded vineyard and are only 20 minutes from Downtown Charlottesville. We were married during the COVID pandemic and I can't thank them enough for the reasonable price they offered for the petite wedding package. It was the perfect spot for a small indoor/outdoor wedding. Plus their wine (especially the Rose) is delicious! If you're looking for a special vineyard to get married at that isn't outrageously priced, this is the spot! :)Thatch Winery's reply:

We're so glad we found Thatch for our wedding venue! It was perfect for our small wedding. The space is so beautiful on its own and didn't need a lot of extra decorations to bring in. We got so many compliments on the venue from our guests--it was cozy, intimate, and welcoming! Barrie was such a lifesaver leading up to the wedding, and I HIGHLY recommend having her as a day-of coordinator! I cannot thank her and her team enough for all of their help on our big day.Thatch Winery's reply:

From the moment we visited Thatch we knew this would be the place where we invited those we love to participate in our wedding day. Barry made each step of the process so seamless and stress free. As a former wedding planner my expectations were quite high for this venue and every aspect of Thatch exceeded all of my expectations. The venue is simply gorgeous and felt like an intimate cozy home. -

We love everything about this venue and all of the staff who work there. Thatch Winery has many open spaces, both indoors and out. So our guests had many options of where to lounge during the reception. Their rose wine is fantastic. We had 100 guests, and everyone fit into the space perfectly.
Barrie, the event coordinator, is the main reason we chose this venue. She is incredibly responsive and accommodating. We knew that if any curve balls came up as we planned, she would be able to manage it. And she did!
It's about 15 minutes south of town, so our guests did not have too far to travel. Cell service is poor, but they have wifi you can connect to. -

A dream come true
My husband and I originally booked Thatch pre-COVID. Needless to say, our plans changed A LOT with the pandemic. Through every step of the process, Barrie and the team at Thatch worked with us to bring our wedding to fruition. The day itself was an absolute dream! I had absolutely no stress at all, every little detail was attended to and Barrie took great care of me, my family, and my guests. The venue was beautiful, inside and out, all my guests commented on that and the pictures were truly stunning. My husband and I have memories for a lifetime thanks to Thatch and Barrie!Thatch Winery's reply:

We absolutely loved our experience working with Thatch! Barrie Holt, the day-of-planner, was so helpful from the start. We got married in April 2021 in the midst of COVID restrictions constantly changing, and Barrie was so creative and flexible. Barrie was one step ahead of all of the changes and made the wedding planning process so easy and fun. Thatch was the perfect wedding venue for us and it was absolutely beautiful. Perfect wedding at Thatch
Thatch was the perfect place for us to get married! Barrie and her team were so accommodating and helpful, especially with all of the pandemic-related conditions. Barrie really knows what she’s doing and is very responsive to questions. We were able to make our day exactly what we wanted. The ceremony site in front of the arbor is beautiful, and you can decorate the arbor and barrels as much as you’d like. (It really doesn’t need much!) The bridal getting-ready room is adorable, comfortable, and practical (lots of mirrors and a private bathroom). The grounds are beautiful for photos, and there are lots of good wine options. We really can’t say enough wonderful things about Thatch and Barrie. We loved our wedding day at Thatch and would recommend it to anyone looking for a beautiful and relaxing wedding venue. -

We had to change our date multiple times, Barrie and the team went above and beyond to provide us with exceptional support and be the guidance we needed. Barrie is the BEST!
Thatch ended up being the perfect venue for our wedding celebration. Initially we booked the venue as a rehearsal dinner space for our March 2020 wedding. Two weeks out from our wedding day, we had to postpone everything due to COVID. Plans continued to change over the next 1.5 years and Thatch was incredibly accommodating, supportive and uplifting through every twist and turn. We ultimately changed plans (again) and decided to move our celebration to Thatch in September 2021. Barrie supported us every step of the way and made us feel so cared for. With Barrie, we knew we were in good hands.
The wedding celebration was so much fun, beautiful and safe largely due to Barrie's help and everyone at Thatch who helped make our day so special. The staff at Thatch were very accommodating with all our COVID safety requests and truly went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable.
We cannot recommend Thatch enough and are so grateful to be one of their wedding couples. Their gathering spaces are beautiful and vary to allow for so many different options depending on your needs. Do yourself a favor and book this ethereal, classy and charming venue with an incredible staff!Thatch Winery's reply:

User2245258 Sent on 07/27/2015Heather and Bruce were very responsive and flexible from the first time we visited the winery. We chose First Colony because my daughter wanted a bbq 4th of July 'party' style wedding -- not a ballroom type affair. First Colony was rustic enough to satisfy that description, but had the capacity to seat 150 guests in air conditioning if the weather didn't permit us to have outdoor seating. It did in fact pour down rain during dinner and we were comfortable with our 145 guests upstairs. The DJ was set up downstairs in the tasting room and that's where the dancing took place. Some of the features of First Colony that appealed to us: the price; tables and chairs didn't have to be rented; we could bring in our own alcohol for the caterer to serve; there is a large walk in refrigerator to store flowers and food before reception; the very kind owners. Some of the negatives: with a group as large as ours we weren't able to accommodate dancing and eating in one area inside; the food servers had to replenish the upstairs buffet via the main stairway that the guest were using; the outdoor lighting wasn't sufficient without additional lights brought in; the air conditioner did not cool sufficiently. Overall we were very pleased with First Colony and felt we made a good choice based on what our daughter wanted.Thatch Winery's reply:

Thatch really is a beautiful venue that turned out perfect for our day with about 100 guests. If you are getting married outside on the grounds, you have options that are great for creative brides. We did a garden ceremony, deck cocktail hour, and tent reception. We rented the inside and out so that we would not have to rent trailer restrooms. I feel like they could get a bit more creative with their plans and pricing, (i.e. a fee for restrooms that isn't the entire fee of the indoor space, but rented RR are as expensive if not more!) Planners and brides need to communicate clearly and ask a lot of questions in deciding what lay out they want as far as outside use goes. We had some hiccups at first due to their event planner not being organized etc. Thankfully she left Thatch and we didn't have to work with her anymore! So then came Barrie who saved the day! From the moment she was hired and started working with us, she asked all the right questions, made all the right moves and put together our day. She hung in there when we had communication errors with my own personally hired vendors. SHE stayed LATE on the eve of and day of the wedding. She helped load, unload. She stepped in where my vendors lacked. She did waaay more than she was supposed to do and she truly saved my wedding day because she calmed me when things were falling apart (weather, late vendors, etc!) She is a true pro that is doing the venue right.
The wine is good and a price point that won't break the bank. They offer great options for the DIY bride with a small wedding or for the opposite- a huge glitzy affair. If I could go back in time I would have worked more with Barrie to have my day come off with out a hitch. She knows what she is doing and she did not drop the ball once. We were exhausted at the end our reception but my husband I sought her out and thanked her profusely for doing all she did and for the winery really giving us a beautiful place to get married. The Charlottesville region is an expensive place to get married, working with smaller wineries like Thatch is a great way for brides with various budgets to have their perfect day. The weather did not cooperate on our day but you would have never known based on how perfectly everything worked out. I am so thankful we chose Thatch and the excellent passionate team there. I know this review is all over the place but the web page reloaded while I wrote it and I lost my carefully drafted review. I think any bride looking for a cute boutique winery tucked away in the hills will not regret taking a tour and envisioning their day there. They treated us like VIPs every visit with family and vendors to work out details and etc. The suite to get ready is lovely and perfect for smaller wedding parties.
