Owner Prejudice Against Disabled Bride, Refuses Service Dog
I've never met a more rude and insensitive business owner. I arrived on the property after a 6-hour drive for my scheduled tour with the idea that I would be booking this venue for my wedding. The business manager was super sweet and gave a wonderful tour. However, halfway through our tour the owner of the property showed up and began harassing me about my ADA-certified service dog. He rudely stated that they didn't allow any pets on the property, and I politely replied explaining that he isn't considered a pet and that I could provide all legal paperwork necessary to show that he is, in fact, an official service dog. The owner proceeded to interrupt me to state "We're not ADA compliant." I was shocked at this and didn't know what to say. He went on to explain that they had issues in the past with dogs on the property, to which I began explaining my medical history and reasoning for having my officially-licensed service dog, something that I am legally protected from having to do. He again reiterated that he absolutely would not allow my service dog on his property and that I wouldn't be able to bring him back should I choose to hold my wedding here. As a disabled person protected by the Americans with Disabilities Act, I was absolutely appalled by this unfair and downright disrespectful treatment that the owner showed me. I was heartbroken, to say the least, to be driving away from the venue that I expected to book for my wedding, in tears.

Five Star Retreat's reply:
I am the owner and Five Star Retreat is my home. Because of the nature of the retreat and what is rented, we are not legally required to be ADA compliant. In addition, we have had one of our pets killed and another injured by “service animals”. We’re sorry that the terms on our website and FAQ were not more clear to you before you came to tour the retreat, and I’m sorry if my communication of these animal restrictions seemed rude or insensitive. That was not my intent. My apologies.
