    September Wedding 2019

Everything was exactly how we wanted and the staff provided excellent service and attention to detail.

The team at the Wyndham was efficient, flexible, and beyond accommodating from the front desk, to the housekeepers, to the bartenders, to Chelsey and her team.

We chose to have stations as opposed to a plated dinner and we are so happy we did. Food was excellent and well timed.

Upon departure the next morning all of our belongings were ready to go and had been stored safely overnight.

Rooms at this hotel are also nice, spacious, and clean.

They made it easy to have a perfect wedding!

Chelsey and the team at the Wyndham were amazing! I had wedding in March with about 150 guests and everything went exactly as planned. They made planning as stress free as possible for a wedding. The food got rave reviews and was plentiful. They also put together a fabulous cookie table and I only had to provide the cookies! Our guests had a great time in the ballroom as well as in the Bridges Restaurant and Lounge before and after the reception.

We are extremely satisfied with the entire Wyndham experience we encountered for our November wedding. The event planner and catering manager paid much attention to detail and even last minute requests. They were organized, professional and went above and beyond. The rehearsal dinner was also there as we had half of our guests out of town. The food was plentiful and delicious. Also a great venue for out of town guests with indoor pool for kids, bar for adults and close to Pittsburgh landmarks. Some of our out of town guests even attended a Pitt basketball game.
We were extremely pleased and would definitely do it again in a heartbeat!!

The Wyndham was a pleasure to work with. Erin was so accommodating even with last minute changes. They went above and beyond what we expected.

The experience was great. The food was wonderful and so was the stuff. From the time we had the tasting and booked they took a lot of stress off by arranging details with our baker and DJ. The decor and room was lovely and the drinks were great too. Reasonable prices for what you get. I’d recommend them !

Great Venue with a few flaws

First off I have to say the good definitely outweighed the bads on my May 11th wedding. Chelsey was soooo easy to work with and responded to my emails very timely. She went above and beyond helping me plan our big day. The ballroom looked gorgeous and my guest still rav about how beautiful everything was.
A few things could have gone better. Booking rooms/check in was a hassle. My guest had trouble booking in the block depending on who they talked to (sometimes spending 15+ min on the phone) and I even had to call the coordinator several times to get everyone who was supposed to be in the block moved in. Check in was also pretty disorganized. The night before the wedding a mouse was in the bridal suite I stayed in.
While planning our wedding Chelsey had said that since there was under 150 people there would just be one bar in the reception room. Even after expressing my concerns that people would be waiting in line she assured me the bartender was experienced and it wouldnt be an issue. I asked ahead of time for them to make sure they had extra captain morgan because thats my family's favorite. Wedding night comes and there was a line at the bar alllll night long AND they ran out of captain. For paying $40/person for a bar package no one could get their money worth even if they wanted to because they would be waiting in line all night. The manager did reimburse my parents a small amount to make up for this.
Some of the wait staff was rude to my guest (they had three other events the same weekend and I think everyone was overworked) and I found out afterwards that 3 of my guests were never served soup.
Overall I dont regret having my wedding here, it was a beautiful night with minor inconveniences.

    Flexible, Responsive, & Fun

Wyndham Pittsburgh University Center helped make our dream wedding reception come true! We were thrilled to have a reception site so close to our wedding ceremony site, since navigating Pittsburgh is such a pain for out of town guests. The staff (with Chelsey at the helm) were responsive to our questions, flexible with changes and our busy schedules, and brought everything together for an absolutely beautiful experience. Early in our planning process, there was a personnel change at the hotel; initially, there were a couple kinks to work out to make sure were all on the same page, but Chelsey quickly got up to speed. The Wyndham provided our reception space, was the primary location for guest accommodations, hosted dinner for the wedding party the day of the wedding, and reserved space in the Bridges restaurant for brunch the day after the wedding. We live out of state, so most of our communication was via email/phone; Chelsey and her team responded quickly to our inquiries, were flexible about meeting with us and when we could drop things off for the event, and encouraged us to make our reception unique to us. Chelsey and her team were patient and responded quickly, helping bring our vision of an hors d'oeuvres style reception with lots of drinks & dancing to a reality. All of our guests raved about the cocktail hour space on the patio and delicious food served throughout the night. Ashlyn was amazing in helping set up and tear down; she did a great job helping our families make sure we took all of our keepsakes home with us the night of the event. The day of the wedding, the party bus we had reserved for wedding party transportation had a mechanical error and went out of commission; the hotel quickly agreed to provide transportation to/from the ceremony site (Heinz Memorial Chapel) for the wedding party. This was a lifesaver! Gabrielle was helpful in reserving rooms for guests in advance. We had minor issues at hotel check in and with billing (we wanted to pay for some rooms, but guests ended up needing to put a card on file which was billed), but those issues were promptly rectified by staff. If you're looking for a convenient, flexible venue to host your reception in Pittsburgh, check out Wyndham Pittsburgh University Center!

We used the Wyndham Pittsburgh University Center for our rehearsal dinner. Our wedding (and rehearsal) was at Soldiers and Sailors, so we needed somewhere nearby. We also needed a place that could accommodate a large group - our rehearsal dinner was around 50 people. We had the rehearsal in the Bridges Restaurant. With a big group, we were worried about keeping the price under control - but they had so many menu options. We ended up just doing pizza and salad, and bringing in our own dessert. It worked perfectly for what we needed and everyone was so helpful in the planning process. Great option in Oakland!

Excellent Staff, but Issues with Event Manager

If you are planning to get married at this hotel, we strongly advise studying and understanding all contracts and invoices and documenting all correspondence. We are relieved that we had almost two years to plan our reception, in part because of the several long and at times frustrating exchanges we had with the hotel’s point of contact, the Catering Sales Manager. Dealing with the burdens of planning a wedding from out-of-town, we would have appreciated if the Catering Sales Manager had been more diligent about responding to our needs and more detail-oriented. In the end, however, not enough can be said about the dedication of the staff members on the day of the wedding; without a doubt, they are the true stars of this venue. Still, we warn prospective couples to be thorough and direct when dealing with the hotel’s leadership.

There were many instances during the planning that shook our confidence in the hotel to deliver the reception we had envisioned. First, just a few weeks prior to the wedding, the new Catering Sales Manager gave us earlier payment deadlines than were in our contract signed by the original Catering Sales Manager. When we pointed out the deadlines in the signed contract, she surmised that the original Manager “probably didn’t read the contract,” but that she “had no problem” honoring the original deadlines. Second, the new Catering Sales Manager was unprepared and disorganized for many meetings.

Throughout the planning process, we almost always needed to send one or two follow-up emails to get a response from her. She would also routinely give us inaccurate information about the event, and many small details were not correct on the day of the wedding (for example, we were assured that there would be coat hangers & water coolers in our getting ready rooms, but there were neither). Most importantly, she incorrectly calculated our final bill to the hotel and overcharged us by $400. We had to point out the mistake, and she then undercharged us by $140, which we had to correct again.

That said, the actual wedding reception was almost perfect, and the supporting staff at the hotel is truly amazing. For example, their technician spent a long time showing us the (many, many) uplighting options and helping us pick one. As another example, we had requested a vase at the head table for the bridal bouquet, which wasn’t there when we arrived. We asked one of the waiters, and she was able to get us one immediately. The staff is very accommodating and very friendly, and the food turned out great (including for those with dietary restrictions). The only complaint we have with the hotel staff is that we learned of a family who booked in our room block was told there were no rooms available, but they were eventually able to find them a room.

Overall, we would recommend this hotel for the distance to Heinz Chapel and the welcoming and helpful staff. However, we would caution any interested couples to be extremely proactive and detail-oriented with the Catering Sales Manager, and to expect many rounds of edits and corrections throughout the planning process.

    Absolutely do not recommend

If I could give no stars I would.
I was working with them starting in around April of 2021, wedding was March 27, 2023

First I want to say, the woman I was in contact with leading up to the day was so helpful and responsive up until I put a deposit down, then she no longer seemed to care. I at first put it down to her being busy with other clients, but I started to have to send my questions again after not hearing from her for up to a week, then when she did reply she replied very short and didn’t answer each question so I would have to ask certain ones again. I was having trouble with the booking for our bridal suite, which I was getting anxiety and she got snippy with me and when I brought this up I got told she’s the best and isn’t like that, that if she was like that then it must’ve been something I had done, which apparently asking questions about something you’re paying for is a no no. I even asked to be in contact with someone else because I felt uncomfortable and like I was bothering her, but I was told she was the best and never got to speak to anyone else until closer to the day.

The woman I spoke to closer to was great and thorough, I don’t have any issues with her but I didn’t speak to her long enough to really include her in my rating, however, both people I was to contact were out of the office until the day of my wedding. So I didn’t know until my rehearsal dinner, I had to call the hotel to figure out who else to contact because I wasn’t given another option by their automated system other than each other.

The rehearsal dinner you could tell the food was sitting under lamps for a long time before we ate it, which they gave us a time to be there and we got there early and I could see it under the lamps and it still wasn’t brought to us till maybe 20 mins after we had all been seated. While it tasted ok it was very hard and cold.

Decorating the room I had paid $150 extra for string lights to be on the ceiling, half of them were burnt out, and had random balls of duct tape on the strands. The white linens had black stains on them and the floor hadn’t been vacuumed.

The day of the wedding I was sent into a panic right before the ceremony because they did not tell me my cake was delivered and me, my mom, my sister and the officiant all ran around looking for it and asking people, they let us look for about an hour before they finally said it had been in the kitchen.

The cake had decor on it I had bought outside of the venue and bakery. They took the cake to cut it and never gave me my decor back, I have been fighting with them for 3 weeks and got my extras the bakery gave them from what I gave them back today, but not what was actually on the cake. I’m missing almost 20 pieces from my cake decor.

When they cut the cake, that was supposed to serve 30, they cut it very uneven and some people got normal sized pieces and some got huge pieces, I had a party of 18 everyone included. Some people didn’t get cake because of how it was cut, that they make you pay a fee per person to do so. I also only ended up with a tiny piece for me and my husband to take to my room and share, which was literally a bite each.

We had got a vegetable crudite for everyone, $6 a person and only fed 4 people, and no one took a lot, maybe 4-6 pieces of vegetables each. We figured they would bring more out and maybe didn’t want it to sit and get warm, but there was never more brought out.
We also were supposed to have the option of buying pop/soft drinks and paying on consumption but they were never brought out and no one was told where to get them.

I reached out to everyone I was in contact with about my missing cake pieces, one of which told me my wedding planner took them, which I didn’t have a wedding planner. So then I asked for corporate and they gave me the general manager who at first seemed sincere and offered me 25% back and an apology and that he would handle it and get me my items, so I accepted because at the time I felt that was fair, yes, I received the refund, however everything that happened after I do think I am entitled to more. Until they took three weeks, gave me 3 different days that my items were supposedly shipped and then I receive them today and it wasn’t everything I was missing. Then he told me our business was concluded because I got what I was missing when I haven’t. He didn’t like that I was getting snippy over something that I paid for that should’ve never even been taken and if they were I should’ve been asked if I wanted them back. Not thrown away or taken by someone else.

I could go on for hours. The only good things I can say are about the girl named grace who was serving us all day, as well as the bartender who had nothing to do with our wedding.

You get one day to have a wedding, and you want it perfect, a lot of people havent done this before and have questions, which apparently means you get treated like garbage and taken advantage of. I do not feel like what I got as an apology is fair now at all, and i highly suggest you don’t book with them. I’m not sure if it’s because we didn’t have a huge typical wedding and only had a handful of people the entire day or what, but how this was handled is unacceptable. Anyone would be livid that their items were taken that they paid for outside of the venue, especially when they were to honor your husbands deceased mother. So if my attitude in my last few emails wasn’t ok with them, but losing my items are, I say my attitude is a pretty fair trade.

I have filed a complaint with corporate, the better business bureau, the attorney generals office of Pennsylvania and I’m looking into small claims court. I will also be getting police involved.

33 days before the wedding I was so upset with how everything was being handled that I actually emailed other venues and looking back now, I should’ve switched to one of them, regardless if I had the time to get catering, I would’ve rather doordashed McDonald’s for everyone than be treated how I was treated, they would’ve handled it better.
