1 or 2 carats...really?!? Sort of Venting

Laura M, on February 2, 2012 at 9:47 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 61

I don't understand why people are so caught up on the size of the diamonds. I walk into a store and the first thing the clerk says to me "1 carat or 2? I said neither, I have small fingers and even 1 carat would look huge on me and she gives me this are you crazy look. I have seen some ugly ass big diamonds that look like they came straight out of a gumball machine, and some gorgeous smaller diamonds that when the sun hits them just right, they practically blind me. Before ring browsing, I always thought that carat was the size of the diamond, it's not. It's the WEIGHT, and depending how it's cut your less than a carat diamond can look like a carat. It makes me sad when the first question someone asks is "how many carats?" -_-

Edited because I realize I should have said the following: This experience was actually after I got my ring, we were just looking at bands and as a joke I said somehting about wanting diamond earings. The lady heard diamond, assumed ring, and proceeded to ask.

We went to a store that had loose diamonds to choose from. To me, the most important was color. Some had such a yellow hue to them. I think it's really important for people to do their research before they go into a jewelry store!!!

I am so happy to see other women feel the same way I do! I do not understand that either a good friend of mine was ring shopping with her now fiance and was telling me oh I like this one but it's only __ carats, or this one is this many or we really like this but I want this many carats. I just do not get it, I couldn't for the life of me tell someone how many carats my diamond is, it shouldn't matter.

You're right. It sounds like you're not going to a very good jeweler. The first question that most have asked us is "What's your budget?" Then they talk about the shape. From there, they typically proceeded to educate us on the other Cs.

I would of walked away if she asked that. I am very picky when it came to my ring and I didn't even pick out a diamond because I didn't like it at all. If you just assume I want a 1 carat diamond ring, I would be upset because you never bother to probe. It's bad service to me.

Wooah ya I wouldn't shop there. haha I can only imagine, 1 carat or 2 mam? wth. When we got my E-ring, we picked it out together and were very respectful of our budget.

I agree, I think a lot of people are caught up in size when that shouldn't be a very important consideration. Personally, I wanted something that had a better quality and color to it, I did end up with a carat because that is what my FH gave me, but it can be bothersome at times. Don't get me wrong, I love my ring, but its almost too big, I got it caught once when I was throwing away some papertowels in one of those metal bathroom trashcans that hang on the wall and it hurt like hell (got a bruise on my finger). Anyway, I think the most important consideration when buying a ring is how it looks and feels on you.

Jennifer- I agree, I have a friend with a huge rock and she barely wears it because she says that it's too big and gets in the way, hmm 18k down the drain...

We bought a loose diamond and what I leaned is that CUT is waayyyyy more important than weight. Especially, if you're getting a round stone. That's where are that lovely sparkle on the smaller stones came from. If you haven't bought your ring yet, go online, get a little education and you'll get a lot more bang for your buck.

    I completely agree with you!

My fiancé bought me a 0.75 which is perfect for me because I do have small fingers

Everybody that sees my ring always think its a 1 carat !

He did spen ALOT $ because he bought a good quality diamond

We have a jeweler who is good friend of us and he also said soo many guys just come in and want big rocks but don't care about the cut .color.or grade

He had the option of getting a 1 carat but the cut was bad and was not clear had a lot of spots ,

I see soon many girls with huge rocks but I look at them and they look terrible !

    Like a frozen spitball

    Sandy- Frozen spitball haha!

Sharron- Already have my ring and cut/colour were the most important to me. Where we went FH learned all about 4 c's and then some, because there are a lot of factors to consider and weight was just not one of the ones I cared about.

<------- Once walked into an upscale Jewelry store (we were already engaged, didn't have a ring yet) and the woman asked how how I wanted the ring to be. My response- "What's the biggest one you have?" She then gave me a little smirk, left and came back with a lock box tray of 5-10 carat diamond rings. You better believe I tried on an 9carat yellow diamond priced at $150k. GORGEOUS ring. I then thanked her for her time, got up and left. I had fun with it instead of letting it bother me.

A similar thing happened with us after he had bought the ring and I def think it's rude. The sales clerks wondered why I didn't want a bigger diamond but it's just not my taste and I think he did more than OK selecting my ring- I love it!

Run from that jewelry store as fast as you can. What a tacky question for a consultant to ask someone! Plus if size is all that consultant is thinking about, she's not going to help anybody make the best purchase. The other three C's are definitely very important.

I get so annoyed when i hear girls that just walk in and ask ooh how much is that one cuz it looks big and they want something that costs alot. I have an e ring that does not cost a lot but it looks like it does, there are diamonds everywhere its not the size of the diamond its the color and shine!! and boy does it shine!! lol

Tips for those looking for round diamond....

There is another measure beside the 4Cs -- it's called the Holloway cut advisor.

It basically measure the ability of the diamond to 'keep' the light. Hard to explain--but for a round diamond with low holloway point it really shine n when the sun hit it the color n sparkle is amazing.

I was surprised to find out that the round cut is more expensive than any other cut! I just assumed that was the easiest one to do!! lol I'm learning all kinds of information that I'll probably never need again while planning this wedding!

Cut and clarity are way more important. I love my bling, but bad bling isn't worth it. I would rather not see the carbon spots.

My FH used a Diamond from a ring that belonged to his Grandfather. The first two Jewelry stores we went to treated us like Crap because we weren't buying a Diamond. I would say they just want your money. Get whatever you want.
