$125 cake tasting fee!?

A local vegan bakery said their tasting fee is $125, and none of that goes towards a deposit or balance of the cake, has anyone heard of such a high fee!?

I would NEVER pay that for a cake tasting. But then again I will not even pay $40 for a cake tasting either.

I know a vegan bakery that sells full sheet cakes for less than that, I can't imagine why a tasting would cost that much.

Mine was $50 and it went towards my cake plus we got to take the leftovers home (practically a whole cake!!). I think that's a rather insane fee. There must have been several issues with customers to cause such a price.

A local baker does that - but their cakes are TOP NOTCH (they're not called the cake artist for nothing) - but it goes towards the balance of the cake. They were honestly tired of people wasting their time - its a small mother-son bakery that takes on a limited number of clients, and tastings take resources (especially artisan cakes) that might not get a return . While I understand it - yeah, it sucks, but you don't have to go with them

Ah no! that's way too high, that's ridiculous!! I don't charge my clients for tastings.

I’d be completely 100% fine with it if it went towards the cake, I understand it as a mechanism to avoid people wasting their time, but with this bakery, it does not go towards anything, it literally just costs $125 for a tasting, period lol.

That is very high, I get it if they mention if you don’t book with them but did the tasting. Usually though that fee, if any, would be $25, however most that say if you do book them that fee is waived. I didn’t pay anything for my tasting and when I make my payments sometimes she ask if I wanna slice to go. I did pay a lot for my cake as it was very unique and custom. Maybe ask if they do open house appearances so you can do the tasting there.

Our cake tasting was free. The way the cakery explained to us, is they cakes they serve for the tasting are the top “extra” layer of the cake. So when a cake rises, and it has a little bump on too, they cut that and make it into the tasting. If that makes sense.... it probably doesn’t!

but maybe vegan cakes don’t rise and they need to bake them separately? My cakery said they’ve never been able to make a vegan cake taste really good, so they don’t offer that. Maybe it’s harder for a vegan cakery, keep that in mind.

That sounds SUPER high. Several of the ones I've looked at are free. The others all ask for $25 and even those say that the $25 will be applied to the final cost. My catering tasting wasn't even that high!!

Just order a few small cakes or cupcakes for that price. That seems crazy high! Are you in Malibu or something?

I think you should keep looking around. If you really like them mention that you have other vendors who don’t require this fee.

We got burned by a local vegan bakery. They didn't respond to our email requesting a tasting. So we popped in and figured we try a couple things and chat. They sat us down and gave us a few crumbled up cupcakes they had on hand and then charged us $130! I was shocked. We had one other tasting and it was a take home kit of 5 cake samples and 4 frostings and fillings for $25. We thought it would be around that. We were super gouged. Not even a drink of water let alone a cupt of tea or coffee like others provide. And this cost was not coming off the price of the cake. Obviously we're still on the look out for a cake for our wedding - if they gouged us this bad at the start it would only get worse. Take your time and shop around until you find a baker that is on the same page with you, your vision and your budget. We all know once they hear the word 'wedding' the gouging begins. They all want a slice of that wedding budget. But there is a common gouge price for most things.
