1920's style wedding: what do i ask people to wear

Kayla, on July 17, 2018 at 4:34 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 11
Hi, we are throwing a 1920's wedding. The ceremony and cocktail hour will be classy and elegant. The reception will be a speakeasy with an open bar and dance floor (and we are taking swing dance lessons so we dont embarrass ourselves!) I'll be wearing 2 different dresses, a long one for the ceremony and a shorter, flashier flapper style dress for the reception. I really want our guests to wear some 1920's style fashion (tho I wont be requiring it.) And am even making a list of websites to buy affordable dresses for our website to make it easy. What could we call this for "attire"?

You can dress yourselves and your wedding party, but it's rude to tell others how to dress. You can indicate ybe theme through the style of your iinvitations. You can also mention on your website that costumes are welcome and spread by word of mouth, but that's it. You don't want to be rude.

I'm not trying to be rude in any way. Tho a lot of people include "black tie" "formal" etc on their invitations/website. Like I said I'm not requiring it but not sure how to word it.

Any dress code other than black or white tie (and only if the hosting is at the prescribed level) or venue required, is rude. Formal/semi-formal/casual/whatever mean different things to different people. Don't muddy things up. In your case I would simply post on you site that costumes are welcome, but it doesn't belong on an invitation.

I agree with PP in that this doesn't belong on the invitation itself, but I don't see any problem with noting on your website that you and the wedding party will be dressed in 1920's style attire, so if guests would like to join in on that fun they are more than welcome. As you said, you are not requiring it, so as a guest I would not see anything wrong with it.

Yes I was only planning on putting it on my website, and having the 1920's theme put on the invitations. I was more looking for what to call it as my website has an "attire" section. Thanks. Itll be clear that it's not required.

I love this idea! Theme weddings are huge where I live. Just inform people of the theme and word it as not required but encouraged. I believe this really makes people feel like they are a part of the big day too! I cant wait to see pics!

You can hint at it in your wedding communications: Art Deco invitations; 20s motif on website, etc.

Honestly I would just say something on the website that says "if you want to dress up in 20's flapper girl style please do." Or whatever. Screw the whole "its tacky to tell people what to wear" thing. Its not like your making them wear it.

"While your presence is the most important thing on our big day, we welcome you to join in on the fun and dress for the occasion for our themed Roaring '20s wedding!"

Something like this - you can't tell people what to wear, but some people like themed weddings and wording like this will let everyone know it's an option. If you have an FAQ section in your wedding website, put it there.
