1St home wishes not like we planned.

Alejandra, on September 26, 2019 at 1:28 PM Posted in Married Life 0 14

My WW family, I come to you to vent! Thanks for reading in advance if you can get through it all, I didn't know who else to come with thought maybe someone here can sort of relate to this craziness or at least enjoy a crazy story.

I just recently celebrated being 6 months married to the man who has my heart! We've been working on buying our first home but recently have been hit with a wave of things at our current apartment. Because of the wedding planning my mind was obviously occupied at certain times but over the course of the past year we have had many maintenance items that have been ignored such as our fireplace not working for over a year and never being fixed, the garage being completely outlined in cat feces because thats where everyone's cats use the bathroom; mind you we have asked for these things multiple times and live directly across from our manager who does nothing. One night my bathroom shower head popped off and started spraying water all over the rest room, my hubby and I were calling, texting and knocking on their door for over 10 minutes before he came out. My husband who is a building engineer told him we needed to shut off the main immediately as he couldn't get the piece back on with all of the water pressure. The manager laughed and told my husband that he didn't know what he was doing and took a small screwdriver to "fix it" after being splashed all over and failing at fixing the problem he went to shut off the water and let us know he'd have professionals come fix it.

Recently we received a rent increase that pushed us to an amount where we can afford a much nicer place else where so we're moving a nice townhouse we found because we just can't deal with this anymore. Two days after we put our 30 day notice we found hundreds of termites coming out of our balcony into our home and since then its been happening almost everyday. We have put in requests, sent messages, emails, photos, and made phone calls, to which no one answers, at this point they have not even sent someone in to confirm whether there's a problem which should be their 1st move. Instead, we had a maintenance guy come in after the 1st request to glue down the wood around the balcony doors so the termites would not get in, lol. Since then they have ignored the other requests and calls and texts and emails!

Last night we received a text from our landlord saying "Hey guys just a heads up that I'll be showing the apartment this weekend, it should only be a few minutes" Like really? I'm just so over it and so ready to leave this place. I wish I would be moving into our first home that we bought but it's all good I have all the faith that everything will fall into place for us. I also was not thinking that we'd buy our first house so fast but I did't want to have to move until we were ready either, but well now we're almost ready.

I think regardless you'll be happier in another apartment, and it's good you already put in your notice! If possible, I'd pack up as much as you can & store it in a storage unit or anywhere else so you don't move termites, fleas, mice, etc. with you when you move. It's better not to rush into your first home anyway! The new apartment will give you guys time to think about exactly what you want when you purchase a home & do research on loans and all that.

Sorry for the craziness! If it's any help (I'm sure its not) being a homeowner can be just as crazy, except we are responsible for fixing everything! Our AC just broke because ants, yes, ANTS got into it and ate through a piece so we had to pay $200 to fix it and also start having our yard sprayed by a bug guy! We've also had toads in the garage that we had trouble kicking out, we had to have dead trees removed and a leak in a pipe for our brand new AC as well under the house.

Its all a part of life! Good luck with your move!

I totally agree with you, I am just going crazy with these pests. It's so nasty. I was raised to keep my house clean for this reason and always have so to have to share my home in this way is just insane. I am moving out 10 days before the 30 day notice is up, our home is not longer habitable in this condition and the landlord has not acted according to the law so we're out this weekend! We started the house hunting journey before we got married, just to educate ourselves. After we got married we saw a few houses just to get an idea and have been focusing on paying off any small debts we have like credit cards and such as well as saving up! Smiley smile

OMG, wow! Yes, I totally understand my sister recently purchased her first home and my mother bought her first home when I was in high school so I totally understand. I really hoped that my Landlord, who is responsible, would handle this but he has not and now we're out.

Just happy we found a nice place and is around the same price so we can still continue saving comfortably.

That's a great idea! We started talking to mortgage lenders months before we even started looking, and got suggestions on what is best to put our money towards (debt payments, saving for closing costs, etc.) and we started making lists of what we want in a house & looking in areas we liked to see if we could afford to live there.

One thing I am happy about is that I'll be able to live in an area that I am not too familiar with but will consider buying at, so there's good to this too. I just feel so overwhelmed by the bad things but there def is good to this.

Thank you for sharing your story as well.

Literally lol'ed at the maintenance guy gluing down the wood to keep termites out. I work for a pest/termite control company and that is definitely NOT how that works Smiley xd I can assure you that the termites will not follow you to your new place, but bedbugs certainly will so be careful of that just in case!

I hate that you're going through so much frustration with this place. Thankfully you'll be out of there soon. Just try to hang in there a little longer!

Just be thankful you’re leaving. You can always report the landlord to the city, as I am certain this violates many laws set forth for rental properties. And if he wants to show the place without giving proper notice, who cares if it’s messy. What’s he going to do, kick you out? Good luck with your new place!

I thought it would give someone a good laugh, I literally stood there in disbelief. I am happy to know that they will not follow, thank you so much for giving me that piece of info. As you can imagine I have tons of boxes all over my house now because we're packing so I'm just worried that they now have a playground of cardboard to chew through.

Yeah I am currently looking into that as I have been researching all of the California landlord laws, I don't really care about my mess with boxes. I am just surprised that he would consider showing an apartment when we have been reporting a termite issue and nothings been done. Thanks!!!!

Unless you're transporting something of solid wood (that they somehow managed to get to), the termites wouldn't be able to follow. If you see termites flying, just know that they won't live long enough to breed or do any damage because of exposure to sunlight. The ones you can't see are the ones you have to worry about.

I will say the cardboard boxes are a BIG attraction to German roaches (the little tiny ones) and they breed very quickly, so if you see one trust me that there are others and call an exterminator ASAP!

Usually WeddingWire is me avoiding work, but here I am giving you a sales pitch on pest control Smiley xd

Ugh that sounds awful and I'm so sorry you're dealing with this! I luckily have always had wonderful landlords, but my FH has dealt with a bad landlord in the past. Luckily you found a new place and will be out of there soon! Smiley heart
