2 middle names or 2 last names

Kristin, on November 20, 2017 at 12:54 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 1 25

I am a divorced mom of a 5 year old who returned to my maiden name after the divorce. I will be remarrying in May and have a 3 month old with my fiance. I know I want to take his last name but I also want to keep my maiden name because it is my deceased dad's last name and I didnt feel right getting completely rid of it the first time. However, I cannot decide if i want to move it to have 2 middle names or keep it and just add on my fiances lat name without a hyphen, and have 2 last names.

Ex: Firstname Middlename Currentlastnameasmiddlename Fianceslastname

OR

Firstname Middlename Currentlastname Fianceslastname

I cant decide the pros and cons to each! Thanks Smiley smile

Ummm forgive my ignorance (I just dropped my maiden name) and please correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t that the same exact thing since you’re not hyphenating? Or are you trying to determine if you want people to refer to you as Mrs. currentlastname fiancéslastname or just Mrs. fianceslastname.

I'm leaning toward: FirstName MiddleName MaidenAsSecondMiddle FHLastName

So I would go by FirstName FHLastName and just have two middle names.

Yes, Sarah like that. If I want my currentlastname to be the same status as a middle name or have 2 last names.

My friend's wife turned her maiden name into a second middle name so that she doesn't have to hyphenate. She seems happy with it.

I personally would choose the option of two middle names because your maiden name will still have meaning but you can be referenced simply as Mrs. FHlastname.

I think moving your maiden to your middle will simplify your life. From what I've read the Social Security office only defines your legal name as your first name and your last name, not your middle. You generally have the ability to decide the manner you want your name list via the "usage method" so if you decide to use two last names it probably wont effect your life too much. But, when it comes to things home ownership and escrow it might complicate things for you. Either way it will work out okay.

Thank you guys for your opinions. I will be a teacher too soon so that might be easier than using two last names. Has anyone experienced the two last name thing?

    I'm going to do

First name maiden name FH last name

I'm dropping my current middle name.

ETA: I have a double first name so not dropping something isn't really an option for me!

I'm First Middle Maiden Married. Legally, I have 2 last names with no hyphen, because that's how the guy at social security did it, but I treat them as two middle names. My students call me "Prof. MarriedLastName".

MrsB, Thank you! So it is working out good for you? I know getting rid of my current middle name is not an option.

@Kristin: "Thank you guys for your opinions. I will be a teacher too soon so that might be easier than using two last names. Has anyone experienced the two last name thing?"

I am a special ed teacher, women who hyphenate will usually end up going by either the first or second, it can get long. Mrs Smith-Jones usually is called Miss Smith or Miss Jones, it just happens.

I went back to my maiden after my divorce, upon remarriage I went with First Middle New Last Name, dropped maiden completely.

It sounds like you want to keep your original middle name, so I would recommend First Name, Original Middle Name and New Last Name. Honestly, four names is a lot. Especially if the names have a lot of syllables. Ex: Jennifer Elizabeth Huntington Covington is a loooong name!!

@Kristin - It's working out fine. It's a long name for official forms and whatnot, but no other issues. My sisters both did the same with their names and have had about the same experience.

Personally of the two I'd go with Firstname Middlename Currentlastname Fianceslastname , the other seems a bit cumbersome. Or like others have said, you can just ditch your current middle name, it's what many women do.

My parents stuck me with two, hyphenated first names plus a middle, and I am not dealing with the hassle of having five names. I'm just gonna nix the maiden name and take FH's last name.

I did two middle names. So legally I'm just First DHLast. But I go by First Maiden DHLast socially/professionally. My whole name is First Middle Maiden DHLast

For those of you who have two middle names: do you put them both onto legal documents or just leave the middle name box blank?

I'm doing two middle names since I think that will be easier for paperwork and I won't have to hyphenate it.
