2 officiants

Hey all! I just wanted To get some information on anyone who has had to officiant‘s. My fiancé‘s grandfather was going to officiate our wedding ceremony but he is highly religious and he felt uncomfortable having to get ordained through the state to officiate it so he decided to step down along with some other health related reasons. So we asked my uncle who officiated my cousins wedding, but he officiate it and she had a minister there for the legal reasons. At this point my uncle is going to get ordained and officiate our ceremony, but I would like to include my fiancé‘s grandfather as a part of the ceremony. Just wondering if anyone had any advice on how to include him in a way that they could share stuff for the ceremony. Given my uncle is getting ordained he would have to officiate the marriage bc he will be ordained, but how can we include his grandfather who is a great speaker into our wedding. For some background, we are not having a very long ceremony, we are getting married on a mountain and it’s gonna be about 30 minutes. If anyone has any suggestions, I would highly appreciate it

Could he do a reading of some sort? It could be religious or non-religious depending on what you'd prefer. We had a non-religious wedding so my grandmother wrote a poem that she then read during our ceremony.

That sounds beautiful. She made her own poem, but not a religious one?

Thanks it was very beautiful and special since she wrote it herself. She has written me poems for special occasions multiple times. It was not religious in nature at all. If he wouldn't want to write something he could always find something online.

Since you said he’s very religious, could he lead a prayer at the beginning or end of the ceremony, or even before dinner?

I like the idea of a reading since he is religious, but I've also been to weddings where a special person to the bride and groom kicked off the ceremony by saying some personal words about the couple. They stood next to the officiant, introduced themselves, and said they were going to share a few words to and about the couple. Once they were finished, they took their seat and the officiant took over. I've seen it a few times and always thought it was a sweet touch for someone who might want to be a part of the ceremony, but doesn't want to officiate.

Have your grandfather do a reading. I'm not sure if you can legally have 2 officiants. In CA at least, there are certain legally required aspects to the ceremony and only 1 signature line for the officiant on the wedding license

We asked him if he’d say a prayer and some words before dinner. I guess we can talk to him, maybe he will just want to keep it to the reception
