Our just out of Photography school, photographer gave us her contract the other day. (I actually requested she make one up for us -- and this is what I get for it----)

First off it was 3 pages long in mice type. Second it was so extremely restrictive for our guests and other vendors I had to balk in front of her. But the kicker is her "penalty fees & charges" which reads:

There is a $200 late payment fee for any payments that are not delivered to "Photography by xxxxxxx" by the required date."

I looked at her and said "200 dollars!! For a late payment fee?!!" She said "Yeah its standard in the industry. I just kinda looked on line at other peoples contracts and found the lowest amount." But heres the kicker......our total package is $300 !! We have to give her $100 to hold the day and then $200 on the day of the wedding.

The question to you ladies is: do you think a $200 late fee is too high?

Sorry I hadn't read the whole post just the original posting. I would try to find a new photographer ASAP. I know it's scary at this point in the game but I had to do the same thing about a month ago (my wedding is tomorrow) You may just luck out like we did and acctually find someone better. Our price went up a little bit but not nearly as much as the quanity and quality of work we are getting did.

With reading all of your posts now it sounds like the video is more important to you than the pictures so you could ask a few friends that you know are realetively good with their own cameras to take pictures for you. You may not be able to get thoes fancy shots from the balcony, but you can always pose for the ceremony shots later too.

That idea my not be an option in your mind but I know friends who have been stuck doing exactly that and their pics still turned out gorgeous. Just make sure it is more than one person incase a roll of film doesn't turn out or some one flinches.

Late fees are necessary. What people dont get is that when you have a business to uphold, and your traveling to check po boxes for payments promised thats not event on time. You keep wasting gas, time, and alot more money. Can you ask the electric company to wave a late fee????? I'll wait. And guess what? While your waiting for a late payment, other potential clients will be calling for that same date your customer is late on. (We cant get upset because a business is protecting the're income, thats how businesses stay open lol)

Our wedding packages range from $1,900 to $6,000. There is no late fees because we collect 30% on booking and the remainder at the start of the day of the shoot. If we don’t get paid by the wedding day our gear doesn’t come out. Simple, no need for late fees just a $45.00 penalty for bounced checks. We are a team of photographers and book over 30 weddings a year. Our system has been flawless and seamless in agreements and transactions. Once we are paid it is up to us to complete the performance defined in the agreement by the set terms negotiated. $300 is super cheap. A couple should expect to place aside 10 to 15% of their wedding budget for professional photography/ cinematography services and the photographers price should be defined by the average of cost in the area they market.
