2020 Silver Linings

I think 2020 has been a very tough year for us all. So much uncertainty, unknowns, changes in plans. Many people have lost jobs, lost loved ones to COVID, had COVID themselves, haven't been able to visit with friends and family members, haven't been able to travel, etc. Many of us have had to...
I think 2020 has been a very tough year for us all. So much uncertainty, unknowns, changes in plans. Many people have lost jobs, lost loved ones to COVID, had COVID themselves, haven't been able to visit with friends and family members, haven't been able to travel, etc. Many of us have had to downsize, postpone, or even cancel our wedding plans.

But as 2020 finally comes to a close, even with the pandemic, I try to look for the silver linings. For example, my relationship with my fiance has been strengthened because of the pandemic: we learned how to be around each other literally 24/7. We finally stopped procrastinating and deep cleaned our home and got rid of a lot of clutter. We each took on new hobbies to make up for the ones that were on hold due to the pandemic, and we share what we learned with each other. We also now have more time to make some changes to our wedding plans to make it more of what we want.

So let's end the year with a positive note! What silver linings did you find in 2020 for you? Has your relationship been strengthened from the pandemic? Were your plans forced to change, and it ended up being for the best? Let's hear about your silver linings!

Great topic! My fiancé is a firefighter/medic & is the captain of his crew so his work schedule did not change. I work at a hospital & my hours were cut to around 20 hrs a week but only for a month. I had enough to pay my phone bill & auto insurance but that was it. My checks go to groceries & vacations- I felt horrible because I couldn’t get our groceries! He just rolled his eyes at me & handed me his debit card... just love him!

Silver lining... even though hubby is still furloughed, we’ve been able to have weekends off together (haven’t in 1-2 years)! He also has done several house DIY projects and does a ton more chores (cooking, cleaning). 👏

I've been struggling with this, but your post just jolted a few things loose.

    1. We've finally cleared out the clutter in (read: DH's) our "library" (it is a tiny room where we put all of our bookshelves, so we call it the library to feel fancy), so it's nearly a usable room.

    2. We got new windows, with an assist from my parents. It is SO MUCH WARMER in our apartment right now.

    3. We DID go to Disney, in January, that was really fun.

    4. My parents live in AZ, and DH's parents live right here, so we've actually had Zoom calls with all of them, and everyone gets along. This might not have happened if DH and I were just going to my ILs for all the holidays.

    5. Everything else being horrible, I've actually gotten myself back into therapy.

Fur babies are also always a happy event. It's inspiring how the tough times really strengthen relationships. Keep up the positive attitude! Sorry that your trip (and your fiance's original proposal plans) got postponed, though that's awesome that he proposed at home! It sounds like timing ended up working out perfectly for everything, especially that you were able to go dress shopping with your sister right before the pandemic craziness! More quality time with your fiance is definitely a good thing - my fiance and I have been spending a lot more time with just each other (as opposed to with friends, at activities, etc), and while it took some getting used to, it's really made our relationship stronger. Thank you for sharing, and best wishes for the new year for you!

Even with all the bad things that happened this year, we had some positives. We spent a lot more time together, we got our Disney vacation in at the end of February just before everything shut down, bought a condo, and added a fur baby to our family.

Those are great lessons to take away from 2020! You being able to be around your husband 24/7 and not be tired of him is validation that he is the right person for you. Sounds like you had a pretty good year (outside of the craziness caused by COVID) - congratulations on your wedding, getting to be your nephew's godmother, and getting the puppy! What kind of puppy did you get? Thank you for sharing, and best wishes for the new year for you!

I'm so sorry to hear that it's been a rough year for you! 2020 certainly hasn't been kind, hoping 2021 goes better for everyone. That is very cool that you are finally able to work remotely! And awesome on adopting the fur baby! What kind of fur baby did you adopt? Thank you for sharing, and best wishes for the new year for you!

That's awesome that you're able to spend weekends together again! It's the time spent together that makes a lot of great memories. I've also noticed that an upside to being at home all the time (thanks to the pandemic) is that it's almost easier to get motivation to do house projects and deep cleaning. Thank you for sharing, and best wishes for the new year for you!

We know that’ll change when he goes back to work, so we’ve been enjoying it. It was stressful when he did some of the DIY projects and I worked remote for a few months early on, but it was worth the mess at home because it now looks so much better. 😁

I know it's been an especially tough year, but I'm so glad to hear that there were a few silver linings for you! I love the idea of a library room, very cool that the room is now usable for you! And awesome that you went to Disney! Always a fun place to visit. I have to keep reminding myself that there actually were 2 months at the beginning of 2020 where things were normal, I keep forgetting about that, lol. It's a good reminder to also remember those days when I think of 2020. Thank you for sharing, and best wishes for the new year for you!

Makes sense. Definitely enjoy the weekends together before he goes back to work! Home improvement projects can definitely cause stress (and quite a bit of mess lol), but I totally agree - it's all worth it once they're completed!
