We travel yearly to the Riviera Maya of Mexico(can't wait until May)In October, you can absolutley do an all inclusive for $2k. I would suggest checking out Book-It, who is having crazy sales right now and seeing if you can find an agent to price match and add "Cancel For Any Reason Insurance". It is still hurricane season.

I would avoid adults only resorts as they will be more expensive. We love a resort called Now Jade Riviera Cancun. Booking a Preferred Club room that has a one bedroom suite with a Jacuzzi on the balcony can be had for around $2k. It's not AO, but in mid October, there should be few kids any way. Besides, the adults only pool is on the PC side of the resort. So, the pool and the beach area could be kid free.

A really inexpensive AO whose perks are not the best but the beach is fabulous is Catalonia Playa Maroma. The rooms are not as nice as Now Jade, but it is very tropical and the beach is gorge

Another non AO option - Ocean Coral and Turquesa Resort
