4 Days Out - Double Ear Infection and a Flight in 2 days..

JGCT, on June 28, 2017 at 9:31 AM Posted in Fitness and Health 0 6

I've got an appointment tonight at urgent care, but between nerves and ear pain at night I haven't gotten much sleep. Positive vibes would be great, we fly out Friday and I can't imagine trying to fly with how much my ears hurt right now.

Any other home healing advice to help with the flight? I know the gum and hold your breath/plug your nose and blow trick but would welcome others!

    Ear planes: https://www.amazon.com/EarPlanes-Value-Pack-3-pairs/dp/B001HTWL8C?th=1

I used them all the time growing up because I had tons of ear infections and my ears became very sensitive.

You can buy them on Amazon (if you have Prime you'll probably get them in time) or they sell them at the airport in the little quick-mart stores.

If your ears are really bad, you may be advised to not even risk flying - your eardrums may rupture from the combined pressure of the infection and the change in air pressure in the plane.

Just an advocate for what @cheval said - as a kid I had ear infections almost monthly and have ruptured both of my ear drums along with having multiple ear surgeries.

She's right about possibly being advised not to fly, but with 48 hours on antibiotics you will probably be ok. I've never used that exact product, but I've used one similar to it and it does help.

    Good luck!!

Aww I'm so sorry, what terrible timing! Maybe your doc can give you some drops to handle the pain along with the antibiotic needed to clear the infection. Fortunately many ear infections tend to respond quickly to antibiotics so my hope is that with 4 days to go yours will clear enough that you can manage the discomfort on the flight.

A decongestant like sudafed can be really helpful if flying with less than perfect ears.

That being said, please do not fly with a double ear infection. The risk of perforating an ear drum on ascent, being in pain the whole flight, and then having to land in excruciating pain is far too high!!

Is there any alternate way of getting to your destination? A car or train? If these are at all possible, I would do that

I just ordered the ear planes, thanks ladies. I wish we could drive, but we live in FL and need to get to CT on Friday, with no real options to get our car back, take extra time off etc. I had this happen as a kid in the Turks and Caicos, so my timing clearly hasn't gotten much better. I plan on making sure these docs know I absolutely have to be on a flight Friday. If it's a big concern to them well reevaluate flights and such. I just hope it's not. Ughh.

OP, I don't know if Amtrak is available anywhere close to you in FL but that might be an option if you're told no go on the flying - obviously not as fast as flying but better than driving.

I know you need to be on that flight but a double eardrum rupture is likely not worth it. Especially because you'd then have to fly back again with ruptured eardrums. Makes me shudder just thinking about it!

I hope you get cleared for flying by the doc, though!
