5 o'clock in the afternoon? Or evening?

Shelly, on June 23, 2019 at 4:47 PM Posted in Planning 0 10
So for our invitations I am in a pinch with the wording of the ceremony time. Our ceremony is 5:00pm. Is it ok to say five o'clock in the evening? Everything that I've looked at says evening doesn't technically start until 6:00pm. I feel like if I say evening it will reflect a more formal event, which is what I want. Do you think I should put evening or stick to what is considered "accurate"?

Our wedding is more formal, and we did "five o'clock in the afternoon."

I would say afternoon... but I don’t think people will think much of it either way

I dont think it really matters. I think this is one of those things that brides get caught up on that no one notices. Go with what makes you feel best.

Technically, 5 pm is considered the afternoon.

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Afternoon is the time of day from noon or lunchtime until evening. There is no exact definition of the time when afternoon ends and evening starts. (This is equally true for "evening" and "night".) However afternoon is often taken to start directly after noon (12:00pm). Afternoon ends and evening starts at roughly 5pm [1] or 6pm [2] or maybe just before sunset. Afternoon is the time when the Sun is descending from its zenith in the sky to somewhat before its terminus in the westerly horizon. In human life, it occupies roughly the latter half of the standard working and school day. In literal terms, it refers to a time specifically after noon.

I think it depends on what time of year you're getting married and location. If the sun is down I would call it evening. But I think technically evening isn't until 6pm. I'm not sure anyone will notice the difference

I like evening better. Afternoon sounds so early and told me 5pm is not early. I also think 5 in the evening sounds more formal

We put "in the evening" for our 5 PM ceremony.
