6-months to go and we’re changing everything.... Everything!!!

Sexypoodle, on May 8, 2021 at 8:30 PM Posted in Planning 0 9

Sooooo, YES!!! I’m absolutely crazy for for doing this..... BUT, with 6 months to go, we’re changing 100% of our wedding plans 😳....🤣 The decision literally came out-of-the-blue last weekend.

Long story, short...

FH and I live in San Diego and, although it’s beautiful, I really didn’t want to have our wedding here. So we planned our original (October 2020) wedding as a fun destination in Vegas. Unfortunately, we had to postpone. But we easily moved the date and vendors to October 2021 (still in Vegas).

Well, last weekend, FH and I flew to Florida with another couple for a quick 4-day getaway. While there, we spent some time on the beach and saw 3 different weddings take place. Something completely came over me and I turned to FH saying, “We should scratch everything and just get married on the beach in San Diego instead“. Without hesitation, FH was completely cool with the idea.

We returned to San Diego last Sunday night and on Monday morning I was already contacting vendors and viewing beachfront venues. Most were already booked for our date, of course. But, out of pure luck, one of my favorite spots had their rooftop available (overlooking the Pacific). On Wednesday, I filled out the city’s “special use” permit to have the ceremony on the beach behind the hotel. Yesterday, we paid the venue deposit and today I met with and booked the photographer and also ordered new save-the-dates. All that in less than a week! 😆

Honestly, after dealing with the pandemic, then postponing a year (creating an excessively long 3-year engagement) and also with FH and I starting our PhD programs together this week.... the serenity of a local beach wedding is TOTALLY ideal right now!!!

So we’re switching from a wonderfully unique vintage speakeasy style venue in Vegas, with a full dinner and celebrating late into the night ... to a seaside chic beach ceremony with a rooftop cocktail party reception (heavy appetizers, stations, bar and cake) ending at 6:30, shortly after sunset. Talk about a total 180!!

So next we’ll contact our vendors in Vegas and cancel everything. Thankfully, nearly all of our payments were due closer to the wedding date and I hadn’t purchased our extra decor items yet. So we’re only losing about $3000-ish in deposits, stationery, etc.

Interestingly, all of that initial engagement excitement rushed back into me. It’s crazy right now, but it’s going to be GREAT! And I’m SOOOO thankful that I majorly stalled on sending our newest save the dates with the Vegas info. It’s a small waste. But I truly believe that everything happens for a reason!!!

Thank you! I knew I didn’t have any time to waste. But I’ve got calls/emails out to various vendors and my mind is filled with so many new ideas. I still can’t believe that we spontaneously made such a big change. But, it will be really exciting to see it all come together so quickly.

Yes! I knew the main thing I needed to do was secure a venue (after that, the rest is pretty easy). But, it wasn’t stressful because if nothing was available, we’d just move forward with our Vegas plans.

The other great thing is that (after postponing last year), I decided to buy a second dress for the reception. Well since we’re having a beach wedding now, I’m only going to wear the second dress and I’ll sell the other one.

About two weeks out from our wedding, we almost canceled everything and eloped in Maui. Eeeeevery once in a while, I get a little itch that I kind of wish we had gone ahead and done that, and now that we're looking at a vow renewal, I'm already getting that itch again.....

Glad everything worked out for you! I can't imagine being in a huge city like San Diego trying to get new vendors, especially with everyone who has postponed, it's probably insane. Although at least you had "back up" plans, so to speak! Are you changing your honeymoon, or was the Vegas wedding totally separate from the honeymoon?

We’re actually keeping the same guest list (65) and since 90% of our guests live in San Diego and LA, this will be local and much less for them to deal with in terms of travel/lodging. So, it’s a win-win all around!!

As far as vendors, certain ones will be a battle to book, but being a big city also means more vendor options. Plus, I know more of the local companies and have many more connects out here. But I rushed to square away my main vendors first (venue and photography). Music is next and I’ve been in contact with DJs and a few saxophonists. After that, we only need ceremony chairs rented, which is easy. Flowers were low on my list in Vegas and we were only using a few. Now, I plan to use even fewer because the ocean is the backdrop and the main “decor”. There’s already enough lounge furniture, bar height tables with chairs and low cocktail tables on the rooftop. So no renting is needed. Being local now means that hair, makeup and the officiant can be covered by people we know (non-guests). Video has always been a maybe. We passed on it in Vegas, but I’ll consider it for San Diego. So, that makes it an easier switch to do at 6-months.
No, Vegas was only for the wedding. We go there too often for it to feel like a getaway 😉 . After postponing the wedding, the honeymoon was cancelled too and we still need to reschedule it. But, now I’m thinking of Hawaii because we can relax during the day (read/write for school if needed) and still have lots of time to enjoy the afternoons/evenings, since they’re 3 hours behind us.

Thank you!!! Organizational Leadership. Outside of our individual jobs, we also have a non-profit. So once we graduate, we plan to obviously use the degrees toward growing the non-profit but also for a new business and other avenues.
