I was talking to my Best friend/moh and I mentioned for our one year anniversary I want to upgrade my e-ring. Not that I don't love it, I just want it in a bigger version. I was talking to my Best friend/moh and I mentioned for our one year anniversary I want to upgrade my e-ring. Not that I don't love it, I just want it in a bigger version. Im at 1.75 and just going to 2 makes a huge difference on my finger. I mentioned that since it was pretty pricey (around 6k) it is worth waiting to do. She then said well most rings are between 6k-12k, so when I get engaged its gonna be extravegant. It made me feel like if my ring on the low side of "how much it should cost". I know I shouldn't care how much money was spent, but having your best friend basically say FH only spent the minimum was a little hurtful. I know its dumb, but I can't help but feel like she made my ring sound cheap and something she would never consider. I think all rings are gorgeous. No matter the price. It truly is the thought and a symbol. But... at the same time if I could upgrade then why not? I just dont have to upgrade to a 20k ring! Thats about half of our wedding budget! Vent over

My fiance` spent $3500 on my ring, which I could NOT believe. I never imagined something so beautiful would sit on my finger! I will never ever trade my ring in, because I want to always wear the ring he put on my finger in the very beginning. Having said that, my ring did come with a certificate stating exactly what kind of diamond it was, where it came from, what it was worth, etc. For the life of the diamond, and as long as we have that certificate, we are able (IF we wanted) to trade that diamond in on another and get full credit for the price that he paid. In other words, if I decided for our 10 year anniversary that I wanted a ring worth $5000, it would only cost us $1500 because he receives full credit for the price of my initial ring. I thought that was cool and had never heard of it before, so I wanted to throw it out there in case that was an option for you.

My FH used that rule @Jenna_ because all of the men in his life told him that was how it was supposed to be done. However, they told him 3 months salary should pay for the ring (25% of your annual). My ring was a little over 14k, and I'm not angry with him for spending that much. Yes I probably could have gotten a bigger ring for cheaper from another jeweler (My ring came from Tiffany & CO.), and we could have done alot with that money, but that's what he chose to buy me, that's what he thought I deserved and he could afford it, so Im happy with my ring!

Rach- My policy is the exact same as yours! When I do want to trade my ring in it will never lose its worth Smiley smile It is an awesome policy!

tash-ohhh pretty Tiffany & CO.!! Now, that you can't be mad about! Either way, what they spend is coming from their heart and what they can afford, so all we should really do is appreciate anything! Our FHs did put a ring on it! That right there is worth a million Smiley smile

My thoughts exactly Felicia! I would have been happy with a ring with NO diamonds but instead I got a beautiful yellow center stone with 64 pave diamonds surrounding it! Tiffanys also has that policy where the ring will never lose it's value! I love that about them, and I get lifetime cleanings and repairs for free! (hell, I better for 14k) Lol

Engagement rings (or any fine jewelry for that matter) can't be lumped into one acceptable price range. You could get a 2 carat diamond with inclusions and tint to it for the same cost as a flawless 1 carat diamond. Not to mention that the kind of setting/band you go with affects the cost as well. It also depends on where you buy it. My ring came from a jeweler that FH's family knows and it was half the cost of what it was appraised for.

Don't feel bad about your ring. Your friend needs to grow up.

Wow, I thought mine was pricy at $500. Personally, I wouldn't have minded if it was a bit less.

I feel like an average ring is 2k-3k. FH got me a full carat ring, basically flawless (he thought if put it under a microscope...I do some lab work) *rolls eyes*. Anyway, my fsil, sil, and a girl I work with all have less than that and have beautiful rings. I really think your friend has delusions over what is normal.

Shannon, I agree! I think my ring is perfect! I get lots of compliments almost daily! And I also see more subtle, but gorgeous rings that I compliment the bride myself! Your FH sounds like mine, he was so into making sure the diamond was perfect. I just said as long as you can't see a flaw with a naked eye 5 feet away, im good Smiley winking

^ that ring is gorgeous. can't go wrong with t&co. Smiley winking

if FH went the traditional salary road, he would have spent about 12-20k. which, eventually, i wouldn't have a problem with. lol. when it comes to my upgrade on our 10 year anniversary, i'll be fine will throwing down that amount for a nice rock. i love him but i'll deserve a nice upgrade after 10 years of putting up with his smart ass. Smiley tongue (i say that with all the love in the world, honestly. it's a joke.) but if he would have spent that on me now... with the wedding still to pay for & everything else going on right now, i would have knocked him silly. lol! my ring now is exactly what i asked for & it's perfect.

i don't see anything wrong with throwing down that kind of money if you have the means to it. to each their own. to some people, a really nice ring is very important. for others, not so much... we all look at money differently and know what we can and can't spend.

it's all relevant. to apply a "rule" would be silly!

One thing to keep in mind is that the price isn't always about the size. You can have a huge diamond with average clarity/color/etc and it can cost the same as a much smaller diamond with flawless characteristics. My FH spent over $6k, which is crazy to me but I'm ok with it because he saved for it and paid cash. My ring is also on the smaller side (1 carat center diamond, about 2 carats total weight set in white gold) but the quality is very close to, if not flawless.

Don't worry about your friends comments. Everyone has a different budget and the price doesn't define how pretty a ring is. I've seen some verrrry gaudy rings worth millions. All that matters is that you love it.

I'm with Paris. I know how my my husband spent on my ring. And the band came with it. I would have been SOOO choked if he spent between 6K-12K on my ring. That's money that could have been put towards the wedding!!

@Ashlee that is very true. cut also has a lot to do with price. you can get a big round or princess cut sometimes for cheaper than a more unique cut. there's a reason why those cuts are the most popular... they have so many small cuts and facets in them that they hide imperfections and impurities better than say an emerald or asscher cut that is more wide open and shows imperfections more. with the more wide open cuts, you end up paying more for a clearer more high quality diamond. while, since the round and princess cuts hide imperfections better, you generally can get a bigger diamond for cheaper but it won't be that great of quality.

    yada, yada, yada.
