I was talking to my Best friend/moh and I mentioned for our one year anniversary I want to upgrade my e-ring. Not that I don't love it, I just want it in a bigger version. I was talking to my Best friend/moh and I mentioned for our one year anniversary I want to upgrade my e-ring. Not that I don't love it, I just want it in a bigger version. Im at 1.75 and just going to 2 makes a huge difference on my finger. I mentioned that since it was pretty pricey (around 6k) it is worth waiting to do. She then said well most rings are between 6k-12k, so when I get engaged its gonna be extravegant. It made me feel like if my ring on the low side of "how much it should cost". I know I shouldn't care how much money was spent, but having your best friend basically say FH only spent the minimum was a little hurtful. I know its dumb, but I can't help but feel like she made my ring sound cheap and something she would never consider. I think all rings are gorgeous. No matter the price. It truly is the thought and a symbol. But... at the same time if I could upgrade then why not? I just dont have to upgrade to a 20k ring! Thats about half of our wedding budget! Vent over

My hubby actually got mine on sale. The jewellery store was going from an independent one to a chain one, so they were having a huge sale. My ring would normally have cost over $3,000, DH got it for around $1400 and I still thought that was a bit too much.

To me, it doesn't matter the size or the cost of the ring. Whom is giving it to you and why (hopefully because they love you and want to spend the rest of their life with you) matters the most.

My ring was $12K and I'm perfectly ok with that. I love it and every penny was very well spent. Near flawless stone & platinum. It's a 1.38 stone. I wanted a 2ct stone, but he spent the money buying a smaller, clearer, better cut stone as opposed to a bigger diamond with more flaws.

Ring cost is different for everyone depending on their financial situation.

That was kind of a bitchy thing that your friend said.

What a ridiculously obnoxious comment your friend made... Let's see just how "extravagant" her ring is IF and when she gets engaged. My FH spent a little over 10k (1.5 center cut with about .5 carats surrounding) and I was pretty upset he spent so much (in a lovable OMG I cannot believe you kind of way). I love my ring and more importantly love what it represents.. as cheesy as that sounds. So mine is perfect to me! Whether in this quote on quote "expected/normal" price range or not!

Angela, my FH too was really concerned with the quality of the diamond (the main diamond) Mine is cushion cut in a halo setting, total weight is 1.55. Its by the designer Neil Lane, so I think that mighta bumped up the price. I want to upgrade to 2k as well, and it'll be like the same price as yours. Wow! your diamond must be flawless!!! And yes, she is known for her comments like that. She always brags about the expensive things she buys. But, she also still lives with her mom, so she has no bills. Fh and I on the other hand pay almost 3k in bills alone, so of course I can't go out and buy a new louie every other month. Plus, with the wedding- all my savings goes to that and another account (we have a child so just for emergencies).

Future Mrs.Coombs- Great idea, pretty much what we're doing!

@kim- oh yeah! I hate it!! Like I said before she is my Best Friend and my MOH, so I love her, but I hate when she makes her comments. She's also pretty selfish. But, I overlook all of that. I believe she means well. Well, most of the time!

@Jas- Very very obnoxious. And im also waiting to see what she gets! Aweee your ring sounds gorgeous as well!

I love hearing all of your ladies stories about their ring- no matter what was spent we all treasure it the same because it came from love Smiley smile

What an incredibly snotty thing to say. Hence why she's single.

FH almost bought a Neil Lane ring Felicia! He had it sized and on layaway and everything, but then quit his second job and went with a Kay's brand ring instead. Only 0.5 carats less, still almost flawless if not completely flawless, and half the price. Name brand has a lot to do with the price.

@Future Mrs.R- Haha! I could already see her being single for quite awhile.

Oh really,!! I love Neil Lanes design! Which one were you going to get? Aweee... well, if you got the insurance you can always upgrade later (your ring never goes down in value) so that money could go to your upgrade-well if you want to upgrade when you guys are financially ready. Wow! Half the price! Dang!! I hate that...spending so much to get name brand anything. But, I honestly, didn't even care if my e-ring was name brand or not. I just so happened to absolutely love the style. Plus, it was perfect for our budget. We're not maxing ourselves out just to pay that bill plus the match band and his band. Here's my e-ring and then it with the band.

That is awful! Sometimes friends say the most hurtful things. A ring is exactly how you described as a symbol of love. I have a large ring, but my fiance had a picture of my "dream ring" (that was meant as a joke) specs and everything...carried it for 2 years without me knowing. He had my ring made, but didn't have it made until he could afford too. Just because your ring is 1.75 (which is larger than most starting) doesn't mean you cant or shouldn't upgrade later. Your friend to me sounds a little jealous because I can't even comprehend why someone would say that. Does she have a large ring? Sometimes us girls don't have a say on what our guys get and it truly is beautiful to get something that he picked or made for you, whatever the size.

She doesn't even have a bf. She won't settle for anyone without money. But you're right. It was hurtful. The sad thing is I dont even think she realized what she was saying.

Awww thats cute how your FH did that. Lots of thought and effort Smiley smile

    Love yours Felicia!

The top one is the Neil Lane ring FH had on layaway. Bottom one is mine. They look very similar. The only times you can tell a difference is if they're right next to each other. Sorry the images are snapshots, I'm on my tablet and can't save them.

Thanks! I would have smacked him if he had bought the other ring, but I can always upgrade it in the future once we are a little more financially stable lol Smiley smile We did get the insurance like you mentioned. Once I finish school and get an actual "big girl" job we may consider upgrading it.

6-12k? dang get me a fake one and let's put that on a down payment on a house! Around here (online with stores located in north AL) rings above 3K are hard to find. Personally, I wanted something small and simple. I think the ring I picked out was about a half ct. and was $1400 before taxes. With my future job, I don't even know if I will be to wear my ering, so that's why I spent a lot of time looking at the bands. My FH is changing jobs; I'm in college. Money is nonexsiting. lol I looking at life down the road, not just the rock he is putting on my hand. I want a car with better mpg, he wants a newer truck. We both need do newer vehicles. We want to get us a place. Here I am thinking $1400 is a lot.

Do what make you and him happy.

If that is what you want, why not?? And I hate when single people give advice that is not wanted!!

I got what I wanted even when I begged him to look for another E-ring cheaper than the one I wanted, but he insisted on getting my E-ring, which we got in 2 parts. part 1 was the actual E-ring that was $3,300, and the diamond was taken from a diamond solitaire about 1K on sale at another jeweler. Yes that is one whole ring, one of a kind!
