8" Styrofoam Balls

Ashley C (formerly P), on April 4, 2011 at 9:53 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 26

So...I am making my centerpieces with 8" styrofoam balls and feather boas (thank you Haley). I went to A.C. Moore, Michael's and JoAnn's to find the best price on the balls. Well, the cheapest I found was $14.99! I thought to myself "WOW...it's a fricken styrofoam ball!!!" but I bought one anyway (to do a 'test' run) because I figured I could probably find them online alot cheaper in bulk (I need at least 15). Well, to no avail...they are not cheaper online (unless I buy 36 for $175.00 plus shipping!).

Does anyone have any idea where to find these balls for less?

Or...if anyone knows of a material of equal quality and usability for less...that would be helpful

I did find the floral foam balls (the green ones) are 1/3 - 1/4 of the price of styrofoam...but because of their consistency, I am unsure of how they will hold...

Much much cheaper for the fresh flower foam...they end up being $4.36 per ball...I may have to get one and test it out. Smiley smile Thank you!

Im not sure if this would even work for what you are doing...but I was making kissing balls out of tissue paper, and i saw an article that said to use a paper lantern instead of a foam ball. thought i'd share cause if i wouldnt have read that article i would have never thought to use a paper lantern.

@Britt - what did you adhere to the kissing ball? what type of glue did you use?

Edit: Sorry, I must've skipped right over the tissue paper part...is that what you used to cover them?

What about just getting some bouncy balls from target? The ones in the big bin in all different sizes?? You could paint them?

@Ashley I used wire, hard to explain. I made the little flowers individually and stuck them in the ball...I was going to use lanterns but i found a pack of 3'' foam balls in the craft section for $4 for 6 balls...so we went with those. But i can put up pics so show better how i did it. at www.paperlanternstore.com they sell white 8" lanterns for .90 each. and shipping isnt that much

Omg these are so cute! What a great idea Im going to totally show this to my fiance b/c while they are a bit pricier than I thought thy would be when I saw the pic they are so much cheaper than the flowers that the florist wants to use to make our centerpieces. Do you just buy a bag of feathers and stick the ends in or do they have to be glued?

@kathleen - the feathers aren't individuals. it's actually a feather boa wrapped and glued around the styrofoam ball

**UPDATE: feather boas are too heavy for paper lanterns Smiley smile tried that one out today...the paper actually started ripping where the wires are. weird though.

@Jennifer, yea I did find that wal-mart was the cheapest ($10.00 each) and I work overnights there so I get 10% off...but I can't use anything smaller because of the height and width of the vase...it looks funny. And that stinks because the 6" balls - which look ALOT smaller than the 8" to me - are like $5.00 cheaper!!!!
