A fondant do, or don't?

I love fondant-covered cakes because they look so neat and clean. I love cheesecake because it's so delicious. What I'm wondering is, would it be too much or taste too rich if our three tiered cheesecake-cake was covered in fondant? There will be a cherry juice "puddle" on top with cherries (not ice cream cherries, the pie filling ones) and more juice drizzling down one size to represent a "Love Waterfall", with the extra cherries acting as "rocks" here and there, and each tier will have edible pearls dotting around them. I felt the fondant would be a good solid base so that the cherry juice wouldn't 'melt' in with the cheesecake. Thoughts?

I actually like fondant.. but most people don't. There is a marshmallow type that some bakery's use though which seems to be more popular.

The blue of my daughters cake really does not translate, via that photo. It was "periwinkle" to match cornflower. So, the photo is a bit lighter than reality. LOL!

Personally, I *hate* fondant... yeah it looks smooth, but as others said it does taste NASTY. Also is sort of hard to eat sometimes... just is an all-around pain.

I just remember at my wedding people were simply gushing about how delicious the cake was... I'd rather they enjoy the taste than sacrifice that delicious frosting for a smooth-looking exterior.

This is a picture of my cake-- Buttercream frosting with real orchids as decoration. I thought it was very pretty, and I cannot stress to you how TASTY it was!! lol Smiley smile

Marshmallow fondant is actually DELICIOUS! To me, at least. It tastes similar to mashmallow creme. That's what we had on ours and everyone(that claimed not to like fondant before) ate it and liked it! Hubby's mom made it. I'm not sure how cheesecake and such would work with it though. Talk to a baker!

@Robin & @ Jamie- your cakes are both beautiful! I've had some inspiration from suggestions with the butter cream; I actually found a theme for our wedding (wasn't thinking of having one before), "Country Elegance"!

I like fondant, there's a marshmallow fondant that tastes really good and I love the fact that isn't too sweet. I would say talk to your baker, they'll know better.

We are having a five tier cheesecake with fondant, the fondant just looks nicer, our baker is putting buttercream underneath the fondant, then when they are cutting the cake, they will peel the fondant off so noone has to eat the fondant.

I have only one thing to contribute. My baker used a very high-end fondant that tasted like marshmallow. It was delicious. All my guests were eating it, and I have seen people leave fondant behind before. Just my 2 cents.

I can tell you from experience and personal preference, fondant is not a favorite of most. It is definitely more for looks than taste. I know that when I do fondant cakes, I put a full layer of icing under the fondant so that guests can peel the fondant off their piece and still have icing on their cake.

Also, putting something wet, like the cherries & juice, will probably cause the fondant to melt. Certain things can actually "eat" holes in the fondant since it is mostly sugar, it almost dissolves.

Lastly, just as a previous poster stated, I do not recommend cheesecake in a tiered cake. It does not have the same structural integrity as cake and can easily collapse in on itself, never mind be overly sweet when frosted!

Plain and simple...Fondant is ICKY!!! It looks nice yes...but its also a good way to ruin a cake. There is a very FEW bakeries that make ok fondant, but still it doesn't taste the best. Look into possibly finding a bakery that has alternatives to fondant.

We lucked out...our cake lady offers a White Chocolate Cream Cheese frosting...looks EXACTLY like fondant, but tastes amazing...My FH said he could take a bucket of it home and eat it alone...I'm sure there's other cake bakers out there with decent tasting alternatives without losing the fondant look.

We're using fondant; we had a cake tasting, and the marshmallow fondant doesnt taste bad (to us!). We also figured if people didnt like the taste of the fondant, it is the outer layer; it can be peeled off easily and reveal the good stuff.
