a Little Concerned About Dresses! Advice?

NextChapterReady, on July 18, 2019 at 2:04 PM Posted in Planning 0 17

So I'm starting to get a little concerned about the bridesmaids dresses we ordered. They were ordered on Valentines day from a local bridal shop. I was there when my BMs placed their order and the owner of the shop said they would come in early June. They are Jasmine Bridal Bridesmaid Dresses. They put down a 50% deposit. Well come June, no word. I called the shop and she says they are scheduled to ship in June and will arrive in the beginning of July now. I said, earlier you said June? She said, once she physically placed the order, that was the timeline the company gave her (Jasmine Bridals). So come July and still no dresses. I called the shop and got her husband who looked it up in the computer and said they were estimating mid-to-late July now. I am VERY concerned about this and don't understand. Are they just plain lying to me? Should I go personally into the shop? I've tried calling all day today and no one is picking up the phone. These dresses were expensive and I'm very worried they're not going to come in at all. A lot of the girls are going to need alterations and the wedding is in the beginning of October. What would you do?

I would stop in to the shop if you can but I don’t think I’d assume they were lying right away. Dresses get held up by designers quite frequently. Also, bridesmaids dresses are usually pretty easy in terms of alterations so they’ll only need a week or two for that instead of the months that brides sometimes need.

Wouldn't they call and let me know that though? If they got held up? This is the third time they haven't come in at the time they said and I feel like that's a little too much!

I don’t know whether they’d call you to let you know of a hold up. All salons are different. Most of the people I know who have had their dresses (bridal or bridesmaids) not come in on time because of a delay weren’t notified.

That's very weird and a very poor business practice then! I have to somehow get my FSIL her dress because she has started a new job and will not be able to come and get it and we will not be visiting her before the wedding. A lot of inconvenience could be avoided if we could just get the right month at least for when it was coming in. I'm super frustrated to have this happen so many times. Smiley sad

If your wedding is in October, you have plenty of time. My wedding dress took 8 months and the dress shop thought it would arrive in 7 and I started freaking out. Now that I work part-time in a shop I know the shop really doesn’t know—designers give them an estimate (like late June/early July, not an exact date which is so frustrating for everyone!). Plus, with our current President, getting through customs is taking longer.

If the shop told you late July, wait until then. Call on Aug 1st.

I get what you're saying, however my stress level is through the roof with them promising one thing, then me having to hunt them down, just to have them put me off again. And I've been a bridesmaid multiple times and ordered from multiple places (even from this designer) and I've never had to wait for six months for a dress and it's always come in earlier or at the time that was mentioned. I saw one review on WW where a girl very recently said her dresses just never came in. At all. And it has me so freaked out Smiley sad

Wait... it’s been six months since you ordered? That seems excessive. I’ve heard 3-4 months.

Can you 1) have a back-up plan (check out Azazie’s delivery), 2) next week call then go into the store and ask for them to pay for expedited shipping and a guaranteed delivery date. If not arrived by 1st week of Aug you’ll want your money back for all dresses (and then writing poor reviews online).

Ugh! You don’t need this additional stress. I hope the dresses arrive!!

Coming from the sales perspective.. if I am dealing with 100 different orders unless someone specifically tells me there is a delay I am not going to go to my customers. It sounds bad but its impossible to keep track of. When you have dresses delivering every week or so it could be hard to keep track of all of it. That being said.... thats just my sales background. My bride side says to go in and just speak with them as people. Are they doing alterations or are you going elsewhere? I just brought my wedding dress to my seamstress last week and she said we had lots of time for my October wedding. Shes actually going out of town for like a month and won't even start on my dress until end of august and I have my next fitting September 7th and I have no doubts she will be able to get it done. Now if they start pushing it into august then I would start figuring out a back up plan and how to get money back just in case.

If you have time, I might go in person to talk with the store - 5 months is definitely a long time. If the dresses haven't shipped in early August you might want to ask for your money back and re-order at another store. Maybe try somewhere like Nordstrom, Macy's, or BHLDN?

Yes it will be six months from when I've ordered Aug 1! It is SUPER concerning to me and yeah it's mostly the stress. We figured if we ordered 9.5 months before the wedding this would NOT be a problem. I'm very upset with how much it's been a problem Smiley sad

I agree, I feel like it's been WAY too long. I hate that I might have to go with something other than what my BMs love (they picked it out) because of the nightmare of trying to understand where the heck it is!!

This is a mom and pop store that is not seeing that kind of traffic. If I had known how awful it was to try to get ahold of them or understood what a headache it would be to get any kind of answer I would have went with a chain store like David's Bridal.

I would go in person and tell them you need expedited shipping and a secure date or you'll have to cancel the order. 6 months is a long time. Lead time on dresses can be 3-4 but 6 is a LOT.

I understand that. Like I said was just giving two perspective because I know how my work it. I take 20 orders a day some with lead times of a week some with months and the ones that are months out I have to physically set a task for myself to follow up. But a small mom and pop place thats not okay for sure. I would definitely have a back up and just be prepared to fully pull out of the idea. i'm sorry to hear this though 6 months is crazy long. My dress is from Italy. I placed my order in November (pre-release) and secured my order in January. I received a call in march that it was in (it wasn't estimated until July) so I completely understand the frustration and struggle here. I definitely vote go in person because phone conversations are easy to write off. Make them take action right there in front of you or be prepared with the back up plan. sorry girl Smiley heart hugs!

I totally get that! I'm trying not to sound too angry in my comments--because while i'm furious with them for not letting me know what's going on, I appreciate all of the encouragement and advice from my WW community! Smiley heart I agree, I think it's a ridiculous amount of time and I definitely need some answers Smiley sad

Thanks I agree--they need to get us the dress or give us the money back. It's been way too long Smiley sad

Yea I would stop in the shop. But it's concerning they would even push it back so many times like that. I think they should either discount you or something to make up for it
