A silver sixpence in her shoe?

Mika, on October 24, 2012 at 9:47 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 22

So I've been researching the history of various wedding traditions, partly because I was interested, but mostly because I was bored at work Smiley winking Anyway, to my surprise, the poem "Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue'" ends with the line "A silver sixpence in her shoe." I had never heard that and was just curious to see how many of you did the something old something new, and how many actually did the sixpence as well? Is it uncomfortable in your shoe? ( I just imagine dancing all night with a pebble in shoe!) I found a New Zeland sixpence for a few cents on ebay, so snatched it up, but curious to see what you all thought about that particular tradition.

I never heard of the last part until I got engaged. Thinking of doing that but not sure what to do with the penny.

I had a silver sixpence in my shoe. (I used a British one, and made sure it was from before 1920 so it would really be silver.) You can tape it to the side of the shoe so that you're not actually stepping on it.

I am going to do it. It is supposed to bring financial prosperity to the marriage. Hey, I'll try it! Smiley smile

My FMIL pinned her's in a little baggie (FMIL used in her wedding as well and will also be passing it on to me) to my FSIL shoe at her wedding last month - since the dress was long it was covered and then she took it off when she changed into more comfortable shoes

I used a shiny new penny from the year we were getting married -- fortunately, we got married in Oct. and not in Jan. so there was time to find one.

In my family, you do not give someone a new wallet or purse without putting a penny in it for future wealth.

I think you are suppose to use a coin from the year you were born.

I'm using some coin of my grandfather's from the 1800s. My cousin wore it taped in her shoe (so it wouldn't move) and under the arch of her foot (so she wouldn't feel it). She gave it back to my mom directly after the ceremony (you don't have to wear it the whole day).

I first head about the six pence when my sister was getting married. When I was in high school marching band at competitions my section would put a penny in our shoe. At first you can feel it and then when it warms up you cant anymore.

I didn't have a sixpence, but I had the penny my mother had in her shoe in 1960.

OOoooh! They have "Lucky Irish Sixpences" on that website, and we are Irish and our wedding is on St Patrick's Day (and our last name is Patrick). Hah. Perfect. Totally bought it.

I hadn't heard about this until a couple weeks ago when someone else posted about it.

I probably won't do anything sixpence related, but my Grandma is from the UK so maybe I'll see if she has one I can borrow.

@Edie, I'm going to look into the Lucky Irish Sixpences. I will be walking up the aisle to "When Irish Eyes are Smiling" on the piano. ;-)

I wonder if it counts if you tape it on the arch of you shoe (I am wearing low heels).

I will be doing this tradition along with the blue, new, old and borrowed traditions. We need all the help we can get. LOL Smiley winking I will be taping it to the inside of my show like 2d Bride said. I like tradition and will also be doing the not seeing the bride the day of. We will be staying a different places the night before and we will not have first looks. We are doing an around the wall or door exchange of gifts or he will be blind folded. I really don't want to rock any boats. I would blame myself if we did not do one of these and the marrage did not last. But that is just me. LOL ;P
