A2 Envelope Crisis!!!!

Melody, on November 8, 2011 at 3:38 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 12

I'm having a bit of a melt down, and may not be thinking clearly. Hopefully there is a solution I just haven't thought of yet.

I just received the lovely linen A2 size envelopes to mail my handmade save the dates. But my printer won't print them! The paper feeder doesn't even recognize they are there and I get a "paper out or not loaded correctly" error message! Apparently my cheap ass printer will only print office envelopes. (If you're not sure what A2 size is, it fits a 1/4 sheet of regular paper)

I don't want to resort to labels. Even clear labels will look funky because of the texture on the linen envelope. I even went over to CopyMax and they told me I would have to order their envelopes online, at outrageous prices. I know the etiquette is to hand write the addresses, but my handwriting is horrible! We're on such a tight budget, I can;t imagine I can afford a calligrapher. Aaarg!

Has anyone else encountered this problem? Any advice?

~Melody

Test that your printer is large enough to take an A2 envelope. Put the envelope in the printer paper tray to check the size; also check the manufacturer's recommendations.

    2

Adjust the printer envelope settings in Word. Click on the "Tools" menu. Select "Letters and Mailings" and then click on the "Envelopes and Labels" option.

    3

Click "Options" in the "Envelopes" tab at the top of the window.

    4

Open the "Envelope Options" tab. Expand the "Envelope Size" box and select "Custom Size." Change the width and height to 4.83 inches and 5.75 inches. Click "OK." This resets the size of envelope that your design will be printed on to A2.

    5

Click "File," "Print." In the Print window, double-check the paper settings and click on "Print." Your envelope will be printed.

Is there something on the feeder that you can adjust so that it fits your smaller envelopes? My printer has that - usually having to squeeze two plastic parts closer together so they just barely touch the edges of your envleope.

When you created the envelope, were you able to select the correct envelope size? If so, double check and make sure there isn't an button or drop down menu somewhere that lets you pick the envelope size or perhaps do a custom size.

Iff not--try googling your printer model and the phrase envelope printing issue and see what comes up! Good luck!

Between Reina's and my tips, you might just get these printed after all!

You may be able to put in the paper size (under custom) on your printer so that the printer will over ride the standard sizes that are programed in your printer.

If all else fails...tape them to a piece of regular paper, I have done it before.

I had the same problem with my envelopes. For some strange reason my printer couldn't "find" them and I had to press print then push one in far, then press print and push again for it to go through. It worked but I did not want to be doing that for all my envelopes. Unfortunately I ended up using clear labels, not the prettiest but the easiest on my sanity. Smiley smile

I would keep in mind that people usually do not save the envelopes for these...don't make yourself crazy with it!

My handwriting is not good either. It helped when I made myself go slow. Or, try just hand printing them. As long as it's legible I can't imagine your guests will pay attention (unless you're doing something super super formal).

Print the addresses in dark ink on a scratch piece of paper that can be placed inside the envelope, place a small flash light in the envelope right behind it (I used a book light because it's flat). If the envelope isn't too heave you can place the light under the entire envelope. Then, trace the calligraphy onto the envelope. It will give the appearance of handwritten and no one will know you had a template to trace. I have a glass table to work on so it makes it a bit easier.

I've also used the idea mentioned above of gently taping it to a piece of regular paper and sending it through the printer.

Thanks everyone. I have the setting on the computer fitting the envelope, but it's still not printing right. I looked up my printer manual and its just not ment to print anything but reg size paper and long business envelopes, which is what it keeps trying to do. I haven't yet tried taping it to a regular sheet of paper, but I think Karen's advise was best:

    Don't make yourself crazy!

It's not a formal affair at all. We keep cutting corners because or friends and family aren't the type to care about fancy details. I think that's why I got hung up on making just one thing elegant. Smiley sad But in the end a clear label won't make a bit of difference to my wedding and certainly not to my marriage. Thanks for putting it in perspective.

Do you have a friend that will let you borrow their printer?

OMG! I think I got it! Hahahaha! All I had to do was adjust my orientation to landscape! I can't believe it took me all day to realize that was the problem! For reasons beyond my understanding, this only works with an individual envelope, and not with the mail merge, but I'll take what I can get. It's just a little cutting and pasting.

My lesson is that things work out once you just let go!
