Accommodating varied budgets for hair and makeup?

Malia, on October 20, 2021 at 3:24 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 10

Hey, y’all! I’m looking for a little advice! I’m currently looking for a hair and makeup artist for my wedding next summer, and I’d be willing to pay $250-300 for my bridal services, as I definitely want to be happy with how I look on my wedding day!

My bridesmaids, on the other hand, have very varied budgets when it comes to what they’d be willing to pay for hair and makeup and I’m not sure what to do! I sent them all a Google form asking a number of questions (favorite snacks, cocktails, robe sizes, etc.), so I know whether they want only hair, only makeup, both, or neither and the exact price ranges they’re looking for. Here’s what I’m working with:
1 - $75-100 for both hair and makeup1 - $75-100 for only makeup1 - $100-125 for only makeup1 - $100-125 for both hair and makeup
I’ve found it very difficult to find an artist that I like that can accomodate the lower end ($75-100 & $100-125 for both), and I don’t want to choose someone whose work I don’t love to meet that price point, but I also don’t want my friend to be upset if I choose a more expensive artist. I’m a senior in college and I’m paying for my own hair and makeup as well as my mom’s, and I really just don’t have room in my budget to pay for my bridesmaids’ hair and makeup as well. Any thoughts as to what I should do?

    1 - $75-100 for both hair and makeup1 - $75-100 for only makeup1 - $100-125 for only makeup1 - $100-125 for both hair and makeup

As long as you make it clear that you aren't requiring them to have their hair or makeup professionally done (that is, they can opt out if they don't want to/can't spend the money), then it's fine to choose a stylist that doesn't meet the lowest budgets.

Yes, they know it’s completely optional! I just feel a bit bad about it Smiley sad

Well, vendors charge what they charge. Your bridesmaids could always find a local salon that meets their needs if they want the professional services for cheaper.

Could you subsidize the services a bit? Definitely pick the stylist team you are happiest with no matter what…could you offer to put $50 per girl toward their service, whether they decide just hair, just makeup or both? It could

Gah pressed send without meaning to! It could be your girls don’t know how much these services tend to cost and are just throwing out random numbers, also.

We’re already subsidizing their flights, paying for transportation and accommodations, and throwing a bridal luncheon as a thank you the day before the wedding, so it’d definitely be tough to find room in the budget - I have two other bridesmaids that I just asked (FH’s sisters) that have yet to fill out the form, so I’ll have a total of 6, and I’m not sure I could swing it Smiley sad

Very true! From everything I’ve seen, wedding services are also more expensive than the services you’d get for something like prom or homecoming, so that could definitely be the case - it’ll be all but one of my bridesmaids’s first time being in a wedding party!

The Google form is GENIUS! I wish I would've done that!

I would say choose who you want and meets your personal budget and I think they'll be understanding if it's not what they budgeted for. They may not have known the typical costs of hair and makeup and that's why some gave a lower budget. Just make sure whichever HMUA you decide on you have the minimum number of people they require. For instance, my makeup artist requires at least 6 services (so 6 people getting makeup done).
