acne after stopping BCP

Jessica, on August 11, 2017 at 2:17 PM Posted in Fitness and Health 0 9

To anyone who has gotten off their birth control pill and got acne from doing so-- how long did it take after stopping the pill for the acne to start?

I was reading it peaks at the worst about 3 months after stopping the pill but was wondering how quickly it begins.

    Exactly 2 weeks.

No one can answer this for you, everyone is different.

The one time I've quit taking BC since I was 18...I broke out regularly according to my cycle. It was so frustrating!

I mean, I'm not talking down to the minute, I'm just asking if I can expect it to flare up right away.

@FutureMrsB thanks! That helps to know that for you it was according to your cycle, not just randomly

Everyone's hormones and their reactions to them are so different. So like RLO said, this won't help much.

Ok good to know... from what I saw when I looked it up, it seemed like acne DEFINITELY happens. I have breakouts as it it on BC, so I'm scared to see what it'll be like without it.

The last time I stopped BC was around when I turned 30. I don't remember specifically getting acne, but my face got very oily, and it's never gone back to the way it was. I was off BC for about 3 years. I'm on a different BC now and still have oily skin, but not quite as bad. I don't know if it was the BC or just an aging thing.

It also depends on when your body starts producing its own hormones again. I've been on Seasonique for almost 12 years. I've been off for 6 months and still no cycle. Doctor says it can happen in some women, especially after long term BC use. No cycle has meant no acne issues, so there's that!

I would say you could see a change in your skin within a few weeks of stopping the pill. But each person is different and it depends on your skin type, stress level, ect...

I stopped bc in March after 12 years straight on the pill. Its hard to know how your skin will react because hormones play such a huge role in skin and of course everyone is different. Obviously my hormones at 29 are verrryyyy different than when I was 16!! So its not like I went off the pill and suddenly had teenage skin again (although actually my skin was pretty good when I was a teenager haha). Generally my skin is pretty clear which is nice. I have been getting a cystic pimple (the kind that hurt but never pop) - just one my chin - before my period comes each month. I never had cystic pimples as a teen or in college, they're definitely related to hormones. Actually, this was popping up before I went off the pill! I saw a dermatologist before my wedding for a prescription. But my skin really is pretty good, so I let the prescription lapse and now use this: https://www.reneerouleau.com/products/anti-cyst-treatment - its expensive but it really works, I just use it on my chin which helps prevent and then heals the cystic pimple much faster. I also know not to mess with them so I can cover it with makeup pretty well for the couple days that I need to. Now that I'm in my late 20s I've been tweaking my skin care regimen anyway, as my skin is changing!
