I am making boutineers and flower crowns out of sola wood flowers but am struggling with acrylic paint colors. I agonized over arcylic colors at Joann's for hours and left with a set of colors I was confident about, but now I don't feel like any of the colors work. Do you recommend any specific acrylic paint brands and shades to yield colors like my sample photos? I'd love to see pics of how certain paint brands/colors look on sola wood flowers! Help please!

Hey Rebekah! Are you looking for paint or dye suggestions? If you can afford it, I would try the paint/dye on one of the flowers and see how the paint reacts.

If you're dyeing the flowers, I would do it in bits. Five minutes, ten minutes, etc., to see how the colors turn out. I would assume that the less time in the in the dye, the lighter and brighter it would be. But I haven't tested that theory.

If you want a deeper color, you are going to need to boost the amount of paint in your water/paint mixture. I would also suggest doing a second "dunk" after the first has dried. Unfortunately, from what I've tried, more than 2 dips makes the flowers fragile. I used Anita's Acrylic Craft Paint or Folk Tale.

I also tried DesignMaster ColorTool spay and sprayed a few flowers. This would definitely be a more expensive route, but it gave the spot on color with the first coat or two but I couldn't get down deep into the base of the petals so that section was still white. You also need to do this outdoors.

Perhaps you could combine the two? A dip in the base color and then spray your final desired shade?

I would also try to find a photo of a sola wood bouquet in the colors you want...it is really hard to recreate those vibrant natural colors. If the pros don't sell any sola wood flowers in a similar color scheme, it's probably very difficult to do. Smiley sad

I'm not sure if you have already solved your issue or not, but I didn't find any flowers in my colors I wanted. I just wanted a more vibrant yellow and pink so instead of mixing the acrylic paint with 1/2 cup water per 1/2 bottle of paint, I instead mixed 1/4 cup water to half bottle of paint. I also made sure I kept the "dye" (water and paint mix) warm. When the temp dropped below room temp I would pop it in the microwave and the colors seemed to absorb better.
I attached the pic of colors and brands I used.

Oh and I attempted a couple with RIT dye but they were not solid colored.

I'm not gonna lie, I got the best color on mine with a $12 crayon air sprayer. Easy topic in variations of color and layer in multiple colors (I got 50 daisies). I'm may actually use these for my wedding flowers!
