Add corset to dress?

Brandy, on July 29, 2016 at 8:11 AM Posted in Style and Décor 0 8

I found the dress of my dreams! I tried on a lot of different styles of dresses and went with one with a zipper back. I did try on other dresses with a corset back and they told me I could add that to my dress. Would any ladies recommend a corset back vs zipper?

Any advice would be wonderful!!

It depends on your body. For me, corsets give me back fat rolls that I definitely do not normally have. I try different bras and everything and nothing helps with it. So I am zipper all the way

I bought a zippered dress and considered turning it into a corset back but then they would have to cut into the beading design. I think just go with what your body looks best in. I'm a fan of both, it depends on the dress.

Corsets can be constraining and take more time to get into. Personally, I wanted a zipper. Do you have a picture of the dress?

I prefer corset backed dresses and actually got mine altered to be a corset back. I find that my body weight fluctuates and bloats daily so things always fit me differently (and I'm not determined enough to watch what I eat). So basically, if I didn't get a corset it would be a toss up if the dress would fit me the day of the wedding even with alterations.

So when I fell in love with a dress that didn't originally come with a corset I asked the bridal salon to talk to the designer, and it turned out they would make it with the corset for $150 more. I prefer the dress come from the designer with a corset back because you're literally tying yourself into the dress and I'd be worried that if they altered it after it was already made the ties/hoops would not be as strong.

Mine came with a corset and I debated changing it over to a zipper, but b/c I also bloat easily, I decided to keep the corset. Along the same lines of @VJ, it has been a godsend b/c my weight fluctuates within a 5 lb range. That doesn't sound like a lot, but I gain a lot in my lower abdomen, which can make me look distended. The corset 1) helps to suck that in and 2) I don't have to worry about being a few pounds heavier in the back.

I would also say that, for me, the choice really depends on the style of the dress too.

I wanted a zipper but bought a corseted dress to avoid alteration costs because of my huge hips. All the zippered dresses needed a TON of alterations to fit.

Im heavier, and naturally dont have much of a waist. Corset backs give me a waist. I bought a zippered dress, thinking about having it changed into corset as well

I'm about a size 14, and I prefer the corseted look on a dress that can take it. I like the way it brings my figure into more of an hourglass shape, and I've worn them before and find them mostly comfortable. (Some of the dresses I'm looking at are more vintage and flowy, so I won't need one, but if I were to go with a more structured dress I'd probably go for a corset.) I would say that if you go for a real corset (with steel boning, etc, as opposed to the corset-style back) just bear in mind that if you do a lot of physical exertion like dancing it's shocking how quickly you can lose your breath if you're laced in too tightly, so be safe!
