"Add to The Knot" vs. Store Registries - Do People Look?

Tiger Bride, on November 6, 2020 at 9:25 PM Posted in Registry 1 9

Okay so odd question but...

We have a website and registry though The Knot. The registry page on website has links to our store registries, and below that are all of the gifts in one place from the various registries. The Knot also has a universal registry feature where you can link any item from anywhere and it shows up on the registry page. I put a lot of thought into curating our registry, lol, and I would say about half of the items we registered for aren't from one of the stores.

Lately I've been wondering if people will bother to scroll through the list or just click through to one of the stores at the top of the list, which might result in them not seeing the individual items buried in the list (I know my mom has never heard of such a thing and would assume that everything on a registry would be from a box store). There isn't much I can do about it other than link everything individually (which would preclude us from getting a completion discount), just wondering what y'all thought.

Typically guests will ask what store you're registered at and get the wish list from the customer service at the store itself. Rather than skimming through an itemized list that includes stores that may not be in their area.

I remember doing that with my mom as a kid, but figured most people would be shopping online now especially with Covid. Good to know!

Even if they do shop online, they still locate the registry list from the store's site.

A month ago me and my mom each bought wedding presents for my cousin. I went to their wedding website and picked something itemized and had it shipped. She asked where they were registered, and went to individual crate&barrel website and was mad that the ‘good’ things were all taken (she didn’t want to buy them towels) and was going to get an off-registry item until I talked her down. Neither of us ever considered physically going to a store.

It will probably depend on generation and personal shopping preferences.

Our wedding website is through Zola and their registry page is similar to The Knot's. My FHs brother and SIL used the same for their wedding and most of their items were purchased (both the listed items on the site, and the individual store link items). I don't think you'll have a big problem with having your items looked at or bought! Most guests nowadays would rather purchase their gift online than go to the store. I agree with Kristen though, it will more than likely depend on generation and personal preferences.

That's a good point with generational differences and possibly buying off registry. I definitely remember going with my mom to print off a registry in a store when I was younger, but I can't imagine people do that anymore...

The other thing that mildly worries me is people have to physically go back and mark that they bought an item, otherwise it doesn't show as purchased. So I may end up with some dupes.

Thank you for this advice! I don't know anyone else who did individual stuff so it's hard to tell. Thank you!

You're welcome! If it helps, when we were purchasing gifts for my FH's brother and his now wife, we bought one gift from the zola registry that was individually added (shower gift), then used one of their store links to purchase their second gift. So you could have some guests that will do that.

That way they had something purchased from both types of registries!

    Good luck!
