Adding color to the lace on my wedding dress?

Melissa, on October 31, 2020 at 9:22 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 19
So, I have a pretty traditional dress with lace overtop that has floral detail. I really want to add a bit of green to the "vines" and other colors to the flowers to add a pop of color to my dress without overwhelming it. I'm planning on using a synthetic dye and a small paint brush to get the details, but I'm wondering how I would wash it out without ruining the dress? Or if there is a better way to do this? I don't like the shiny look of puffy paint. Google's no help 😭 Adding color to the lace on my wedding dress? 1

I wouldn't recommend dyeing if if you plan on washing the color out later.

I would NOT use paint. What about appliqués? That could actually look cool and very unique.

Do not do this with dye. These fabrics do not accept it evenly unless vat dyed.
If you want color, use small pearl beads, or crystals. Pearl beads come individually or in long ropes. They are commonly used with lace on gowns, and veils. Be very hesitant about hot glue. Most synthetic bridal fabrics, if at all hot, will melt the fabric to hard blobs under each bead. most people as beginners have the most reliable, nothing goes wrong results, hand sewing them on. A child with patience can do it. If you want to look up doing bead embellishments, it is a category in embroidery, or beadwork. Some hobby stores will cost 10 to 20 times as much for pearl beads commonly sold for bridal items, as they will for most beads, the same quality. Deal with a quantity supplier.
https://firemountaingems.com look under 2mm pearl beads. translucent, iridescent, pearly and variegated will come up. You may want some larger 3 mm (millimeter) for a design in 2 sizesAdding color to the lace on my wedding dress? 4

Look in a hobby store to see actual sizes and finishes, to visualize. If you will do a lot, mostly order in soft colorations. They add up and seem darker when there are a lot.Look at bead embellished gowns in a wedding gown salon. And buy a spool of clear monofilament thread, practically invisible. needles, and needle threaders. Easy if you have patience.

I love that look! My only worry is that it will clash with the already added appliques? Seems like there's a lot on the dress already

I would suggest finding a few vine appliqués you like on Etsy and show them and your dress to a seamstress. I would think layering a few on top of or in between your current appliqués would look great and intentional, but a seamstress will be the best person! Plus she can suggest which style appliqués you should choose.

I think your idea is rad!!!

In my opinion, your dress is beautiful the way it is. I wouldn't paint it because you could very easily ruin the dress. If you want to add color, I would wear colorful accessories.

Completely agree. Show the same stress and see what she says. She could also just remove some of the current appliqués and replace them with the colored ones

What if you added green lace leaves under the top layer? I wouldn’t dye the dress those fabrics are finnicky and you risk ruining your dress or deciding it doesn’t look good after all

How about adding beads to the appliqués you already have on your bodice? I personally would consider soft colors.

I agree with others and would not paint or dye your dress, but would instead look at appliques or other embellishments you can add that would be easy enough to remove if needed.

I bought my dress pre-owned and the previous owner added a belt to it that I didn't like. It was easy enough to remove on my own by pulling the threads, and you can't even tell the belt was there unless you were to do a super close inspection of the dress and find the pin holes where the thread went through.

I am not sure, but would have to agree that using paint is not a good idea to do.
I do love the idea that you have and agree with pp that you should use the already colored appliques. I believe that could be the look that you are going for and it will look absolutely gorgeous, let alone be a one of kind look!
