Adding sleeves to a dress?

Judith, on February 21, 2014 at 12:25 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 16

So, as most of you know, almost every wedding dress out there is sleeveless. I found a beautiful sweetheart neckline dress, but I am very self-conscious about my flabby arms flapping around in the wind on my wedding day. I want to feel free with 1/2 to 3/4 sleeves!

I've been doing research and boleros cover up too much and I decided I am looking for an off the shoulder wedding jacket that goes over my dress. However, my dress has sequined appliques all over the top half of the dress, and I'm not sure what will go.

I've also thought of having a seamstress make the jacket, or adding sleeves to my dress, but I can't afford much.

Any suggestions?

Can you post a photo of the dress?

Well ... not every dress out there is sleeveless, but it sounds like you purchased one that was. where did you order from and who is the designer? the designer of my dress added cap sleeves to it that perfectly matched the beading on the top of the dress. is that an option?

I think David's Bridal actually sells sleeves that you can have sewn onto your dress when you get alterations done. I can't imagine it would be too expensive to do. Try searching for "sleeves" on their website. There may be other places I don't know of that sell sleeves as well.

So this is a pic of the dress I purchased at davids bridal.

And this is an example of the style of wedding jacket(s) I'm looking at.

Hmmm ... to be completely honest, i can't picture how a jacket thing like you pictured would look with your dress. i mainly say that because of the waist. have you talked to david's about this, or tried any of the jackets on with your dress??

Also, I already checked with David's Bridal. They can add cap sleeves to the dress, but nothing in the half to 3/4.

I'm curious if its possible to match the same sequins/applique from the dress and have a seamstress make the jacket for me. Still have no idea how much it would cost.

The dress has buttons down the back, so the jacket should have buttons too, to match the style.

In my head you can just attach some "tubes" to the underarm part of the dress... LOL Thank goodness I'm not a seamstress.

David's bridal has some shrugs -- they were pretty ugly and took over the entire neckline.

Can they check with the designer and get the same lace or material to have the alterations people make some sort of sleeve? If they can make cap sleeves, I don't see why they can't extend that to make a more 3/4 length sleeve.

I know my dress came with a jacket made of the same lace, but that was only because the shop owner had randomly asked them to make one when she ordered the dress sample and gave it to me as I wanted either straps or sleeves (I have fat, flabby arms and while I normally don't mind... it would be nicer if they were covered up for pictures).

    Good luck!

I had sleeves added to my dress. I ordered extra sheer material and appliques from the vendor when I ordered my dress.

That's weird, I wonder why they have these on their website if they told you in the store that all they have are cap sleeves?

Those might be more sheer than you'd like, but I almost feel like it wouldn't be that difficult to get some fabric and make something simple like those. Or, if you like a jacket, I would picture something more open like this, so that you aren't covering the entire front of the dress.

Just some thoughts! I almost chose a strapless dress, but ended up finding one with an off-shoulder sleeve. Otherwise, I would have had the same problem finding a cover-up because I don't want to be that bare on my wedding day.

    BTW, your dress is beautiful!

I am having the same problem. Did my final fitting and super happy except for the lack of sleeves. I am just so uncomfortable with my arms. I have been working out and they look better, but not where I want them to be. I am looking for a way to add off-the-shoulder organza sleeves that have a drape look like that pictured below. Does anyone know if a seamstress could do this, or if I am just out of luck.

Does anybody know if it's possible to add long sleeves to a dress at David's Bridal? I haven't bought the dress yet, I love it but would love even more if it had long sleeves... any idea about the prince range for that? The dress' price is pretty reasonable so maybe the final price with sleeves and alterations would still be decent. Also, can you add another layer of tulle or some sort of sparkle/detail to the skirt?

Isabella david''s will add sleeves to a dress, but they will not alter the dress. I'm getting removable sleeves they are long and light weight not sure how much yet my appointment is coming soon. You might have to go to a different alterations business to do any major changes to the dress.
