Addressing lined envelopes

Andrea, on January 15, 2012 at 1:44 PM Posted in Planning 0 22

I bought some beautiful wedding invitations with lined envelopes. I spent a little more money on them than I had originally planned to spend on invitations, so when they gave me the option to print addresses onto the envelopes for an extra fee, I got cheap, and declined. I'm kicking myself now.

While the lined envelopes are beautiful and add an extra element of formality to the invitations, they're too thick to run through a printer! I stopped by Kinko's and they told me that they couldn't help me out. Last night, FMIL and I met with the owner of a paper company and print shop, and she told me the same thing. Ugh!! FMIL offered to help pay for a calligrapher, but the qoute that we received was crazy expensive. I can't justify having anyone spend that much on addressing our invitations. Our other options are putting labels onto the envelopes (I think that looks tacky for these invites) or to handwriting the invitations.

How have you addressed your lined envelopes?

I'm hand-writing mine. Even if it's just a plain cursive or print I'd rather receive that than an invitation that's printed or has a label. That's just me. Maybe you have a family member or close friend who has good everyday handwriting and you can pay/bribe them to help you out if you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself?

If you absolutely positively 100% cannot have them hand-addressed, go for a clear label maybe?

Your invitations should be hand addressed... it doesnt have to be calligraphy.

Thanks! I think that I am just going to handwrite the addresses. I've probably been invited to around 15 weddings over the past couple of years, and I've never received a handwritten one. I wasn't sure how it was going to look.

Who cares if it is hand written or typed. I went to four weddings last year and I can honestly saw I do not remember if it was handwritten or typed. The only person that will probably notice is you. If it is something that you want to do, you should do it. BUT you shouldn't do it because of what others may think. The thing is going in the trash the moment they open the invitation.

Umm...I care about my invitations - the actual invite, the RSVP, the lined envelopes, and yes, the way that they're addressed. I'm not worried what others will think of the way that I addressed the invitations. It's more that I spent all this time searching for and money buying the invitations and the formal lined envelopes to go with them. Our wedding is going to be at a fairly upscale country club. I'm more concerned that a hand addressed envelope would 1. not go with our formal invitations, and 2. that they may not set the tone for our wedding. I LOVE the invitations that we bought and I want them to be perfect.

@ Andrea that's what I meant. If it is important to you then you should do it. But don't do it because you are worried about what others may think. But from you post above you are doing it because it is important to you.

I just get annoyed when people do things that they don't want to do because it is "tradition." Good luck!

So, I think that this may be a sign that I've been spending too much time stressing about the details of this wedding...

Maybe talk to one of your family members or bridesmaids and see if anyone with really nice handwriting wouldn't mind helping you out. (If you are not sure how nice yours will look)

PM me if you want to talk about Calligraphy.

~ good luck ~ Happy planning

Did you get lined inner and outer envelopes?

Are you concerned the handwriting won't look good or the time involved in writing them out? If it's the time thing, it really doesn't take too long, I did them in a few batches. Also, I'm not sure if this would work on yours, but my printer included a guide line insert that I could use to show lines through the envelope (outer only, although that was the only place I had more than one line). The guide line thing helped me keeping everything straight and the spacing right.

Yes, I got lined inner and outer envelopes. The one calligrapher who quoted us charged $4.50 for the outer envelope and $2.50 for the RSVP. That's $7 per invite. Insanity. I don't know who would pay that much. One of my BM heard about someone who will do calligraphy for around $1 an invite. If someone actually does exist for that price, I'd pay for calligraphy. I just have a feeling that it's too good to be true.

My friends, family, and I are all a little nervous about how our handwriting will look. My handwriting is not horrible, but it's not great. I do have several others who are willing to help handwrite the invitations if it comes down to it, so I don't think that it should take us too long.

Well I remember when you posted pictures and they're gorgeous so I can understand why you would want this last touch to be perfect too! IMO though people like getting handwritten stuff in the mail - and even if the writing itself isn't perfect, it's that personal touch that your guests will appreciate.

$1/invite would be awesome though if you can find someone who would do it -- just get samples first, we all have the "got what we paid for" story!

I have printed lined envelopes without any problem, just the guest names on the front of the inner envelopes. We only charge 35 cents per envelope for printing names or addresses in black ink in a matching font. It is not hand-calligraphy, and an excel file is required for the service.

Have you considered wrap around labels? This type of item is available from www.paperpresentation.com, and come in a variety of colors.

I have never even heard of wrap around labels. They might be a good idea. I'll check them out. Thanks!

Here are my invitations. The last picture is a sample picture from the stationary company that made the invitations (I thought that it might be a little better than my cell phone pics).
