Advice for Chalkboard Guest book!

EGal92014, on March 17, 2014 at 1:19 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 10

Hi All,

My fiance and I have chosen to do a chalkboard for our guest book! We purchased a big beautiful board from Home Goods for a great price that we are incredibly happy with. I will paint in white "Dan & Libby 9.20.14" across the top. Now, I need to know what kind of pen to have the guests sign in. We obviously want the names to be permanent, but we need a pen that dries quickly so guests don't smudge each other's names! Has anyone done the chalkboard idea? Do you have a suggestion on a pen? Pen thickness?

Thanks in advance, girls!

Libby

You can pick up pens that they use on chalk boards and black boards at restaurants. I think they're called chalk board pens?

I have seen chalkboard markers on amazon, joanns, etc., they make a clean line instead of the fuzzy one that actual chalk does, but I'm not sure about the drying time.

Metallic sharpies would work really well and be permanent. Or paint pens, however that can get messy. You could always get chalkboard markers and seal your board with polyurethane

If you ask someone who works at Hobby Lobby/Michael's?Joann's they will probably be able to recommend something specific

You need either a chalkboard marker or bistro pen. You can get them at any craft store. Buy multiples, they can run out fast. And they're only semi-permanent, so if the board gets wet, your writing will smear.

We did our program this way, a big chalkboard easel (Also from Home Goods!), and used chalk markers. They looked really nice, but they CAN be erased.

We're doing a fingerprint tree for a guest book idea, it comes with an Archival Ink Pen, maybe see if you can find one of those for the chalkboard, they are supposed to be waterproof and fade proof Smiley smile

I agree with using metallic sharpies... either gold or silver (whichever you like better). It'll show up nicely and be permanent/dry immediately. I'd get a few in case they dry out.

Hi Libby, Just came across your post on this site asking about pens for your chalkboard. I can answer some of your questions for you. Chalk Markers are actually like paint pens, but they can be wiped away with water if necessary. I agree with Rachel that you would have to seal the board afterward with polyurethane or something similar as they are not permanent. These type of markers can also write on glass, ceramics and anything else that is non porous eg wine glasses. I happen to sell these markers, so I know all their pros and cons. I am happy to give you a complementary pack for you to try, but I am sure you will be happy with the outcome. Hit me up if you would like me to send you a set. Best wishes
