Advice for Recording Own "First Dance" Song

Kylie, on November 13, 2017 at 8:38 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 10

So FH and I have been talking for a while, and we've decided to record our first dance song ("Such Great Heights" by Iron and Wine, if you'd like to take a listen) ourselves. Does anyone have advice on the best way to do that? We've got the recording equipment to do a reasonable job ourselves, but would it be better to go to a studio? We're trying to keep this whole shindig as budget-friendly as possible!

Why not chat with your DJ to see what they can do?

What a fun idea! Like Ashley said, get with your DJ and see if they have any recommendations! If you can do it yourselves and like the finished product, I say go for it. It'll be something fun for you and your FH and I'm sure it'll be really meaningful to you guys in the future!

Yes, are you professionals? I'm just afraid it could come out to be kind of awkward.

Studio. Always. Unless your equipment is studio quality, you have a sound proof room (So no outside noise interferes) and you have the proper programs at home - which most do not have - it should be done in a studio.

Don’t be like me. We didn’t plan on anyone (professional or guest) record anything from our wedding but my husbands cousin told us he was going to record the highlights of the ceremony and reception for his grandmother that was ill and couldn’t attend. I was really excited after the day of to have it recorded....and his iPhone was stolen on the way home and not backed up on the cloud. Granted it was something we didn’t expect to have or ask for until the day of when he told us, but it’s still soul crushing. Go with the pros. I wish we hired a videographer now looking back.

Catie- I think she means for them to sing the song and have it recorded and then played for their first dance

Going to a studio will guarantee a higher quality. However, you know the equipment you have - it sounds like you've done this before. If you feel like you'd be able to pull it off, go for it. I would be too nervous to try to pull something like that off myself for my own wedding - even though I am a professional musician with a semi-amateur home studio. I'd rather just have someone else handle it.

I got that. It's a rare bride or groom who is really good enough to make this work. Your guests will be kind in any case; go to a pro if you must, but I'd personally pass.

I would highly recommend doing this at a studio, and plan for more than one recording. My FH and I are looking into this, so he did a demo and we'll probably do one or two more.
