Advice for saving money on flowers?

Melissa, on May 18, 2021 at 7:22 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 16

Hi all! My wedding is a little under 4 months away so I definitely need to book my florist soon. I believe that flowers can really make or break a vibe, so I'm okay with paying a little more if I have to BUT WOW are flowers expensive! Maybe it's worse in Los Angeles Smiley cry My FH and I are paying for the wedding ourselves, so if you have any advice for cutting some costs on florals, that still allow for beautiful displays, I'm all ears! Thank you!!

(One thing I'll note is that I really don't have great DIY skills, and putting together my own wedding flowers would make me very nervous haha)

I think Fifty Flowers has prearranged bouquets and centerpieces that can be shipped to you. You just have to trim the stems and put the centerpieces in your own vase. Haven't ordered from them but I've heard the quality and pricing is great.

Look up flowers that are in season during your chosen wedding month. Just like fruits and vegetables, out of season flowers are much more expensive because they have to be forced to grow, which requires a lot of work. This can sometimes make a flower 3-4 times more expensive.

Limit the number of flower types you use. This was a trick a florist friend told me. Florists order in bulk, and excess flowers ordered will be worked into your cost. The more different types of flowers you choose, the more excess flowers they have to order. By sticking to 1-2 blooms, you will reduce the likelihood they have to order a lot more flowers than you need, so you don't end up paying for excess flowers across 5-6 different types. (Example, with made-up numbers - your bouquet uses 50 blooms. Roses have to be ordered in a quantity of 50. But you have chosen 50% roses, 10% orchids, 20% peonies, 10% calla lilies, and 10% stephanotis. So now instead of just paying for roses, you are paying for 50 roses when they're only using 25, paying for a stem of 15 orchids when they'll only use 5, 25 peonies when they're only putting 10 in there, and so on.) Single-flower bouquets and arrangements can look very chic, too!

If you’re in Los Angeles, go to the flower district downtown. At the Flower Market you can DIY or find an inexpensive florist who works there and will arrange them for you.

Otherwise go on thumbtack.com or search Yelp.com. Even Instagram has inexpensive florists who will work with your budget and keeping things in season.

If you are into DIY, fiftyflowers.com sells fresh flowers very inexpensively with how to videos. They are also much less expensive than fake (silk/wood) flowers.

I'm renting my bouquets (silk) from Something Borrowed Blooms. They have decore, including center pieces, you can rent as well.

I'm purchasing personal florals (bouquets, boutonnieres, corsages) from a florist and doing simple DIY's for the rest - centerpieces will be greenery garlands from Costco (4 for $100) and bud vases with flowers from FiftyFlowers.com (can't be too difficult to arrange!).

Sola Wood Flowers! I love mine. My SIL crafted them bc she’s like that- said it would’ve been a cute party activity. But they have a lot of pre-done options too! And there are so many sales!!

You can use the flowers of the arch/gazebo to decorate the table/tables

Fh and I made the decision a few months ago to cancel the flowers that we’re 1700 dollars and I’d do them myself. I searched YouTube for some DIY inspiration. I got our 400 dollar deposit back and got all the supplies for the arrangements with it. I also was able to get Lings Moments corsages and boutonnières with it. We also have ceremony flowers from Lings moments as well. I had saved in advance for the bridal party flowers which were from Etsy.

There's a flower shortage right now which is going to drive up the cost of florals. If you're wanting to lower your cost, don't have boutonnieres or corsages. See if you can repurpose any arch or ceremony decorations for your reception (arch décor for sweetheart table, aisle décor for centerpieces, etc).

Oh hi! a fellow LA bride. I'm doing a more DIY thing, but if you aren't about that I'd def. go with fifty flowers, the DTLA flower mart, or a friend told me about So Cal Wholesale Flowers in Van Nuys. Go ahead of time to check out prices and then go from there. Also if sign up for the mailing list at Joanne's or Michael's you can be up to date on when they have sales. I bought some really pretty fake flowers at Joanne's recently- 2 wreathes, 4 garlands, 9 bunches and 9 rolls of burlap for just over $100 because everything was on sale AND I had coupons
