Advice for stopping the Pill

DlovesD, on June 15, 2013 at 6:56 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 20

Have any of you recently stopped taking birth control? Did you have any horrible side effects? FH really wants me to stop taking mine because I get every side effect in the book but I'm worried mostly about cystic acne! I know that sounds vain but I used to have acne so bad I'd be embarrassed to leave the house! Does anyone have any tips?

I was on it for 4 years because of acne. When I finally went off of it (I have cysts on my liver) I went from 125 pounds to 96 pounds. I went to the doctor because I got so scared and bloodwork came back normal so they said it was from the pill. When I went off of it I just finished the pack and never started a new one.

Have you tried taking a birth control with a lower amount of estrogen? I take Seasonale/Seasonique, now and I haven't had any issues, the other birth controls I was on made me have terrible side effects, and my DR said it was probably too much estrogen and put me on this. Since then no problem Smiley smile

I have just come off it- like in the last week or two come off it (we are ttc)

I have lost a tiny bit of weight but nothing major at all (the pill didn't really effect my weight) and I have had a fair few headaches, hurts behind my eyes and my belly feels a tad bit 'off'

(should say I always got on with the pill)

Have you thought about other types of BC?

I've been on a variety of pills, used Nuvaring, & had an IUD for 3 years. Now I'm on ortho-tri cylcen. Im thinking a lower dose pill might be a good option.

The side effects I get... Extreme nausea the first 2 weeks of a pack. Tenders breasts to the point of not being able to hug FH (may I add I have a very high pain tolerance so I know these are bad!) moodiness, possibly related anxiety, and dry eyes that cause me to use a bottle of eye drops a week

I was planning on stopping it right after the wedding next June but I'm not sure I can hold out that long!

I have the birth control that's inserted in the upper portion of my arm. I think it has a lower amount of estrogen. When I was on the pill (tri-sprintec) I would get really sick and my periods were horrible (might be TMI). I tried the seasonale...and i literally gained like twenty pounds. So, this one (I can't even think of the name because I seriously just woke up) OBGYN to discuss what other forms to use (if you plan on staying on some form of birth control) or how to help take care of the side effects that you're getting when you stop taking your current one. Hope that helps!

P.S.....I got this thing in February...and I haven't had a period and probably won't for the next three years. Can I get a woot woot?!

I had no side effects going off the pill other than acne around my period. It was never worse than what I had before I went on the pill. The increase in libido was awesome as was the lethargy leaving. Personally, I didn't want to go back on the pill because I like not having the side effects, but I've been scared to death to get pregnant again after my miscarriage that I'm doing for my sanity.

Hmmm does your doc know about the side effects? I would say try a different low dose for sure

She knows yeah, I had to go in a year ago because the pharmacy gave me the generic pill from hell, Tri-Nessa... I almost lost my mind! She's of the thought that you just have to put up with side effects to take the pill, although I'm sure she'd switch me if I asked

I was on the depo shot, since FH left to deployment I thought it would be the perfect time to take a break. I have been slightly breaking out (which I hate) but I'm not as emotional which is great! When he returns I'll be changing BC.

I can't take it. I don't know why, but i become crazy when I'm on it...like scary crazy. Also, I got intense migraines when I was on it. Plus all the recalls you see on tv is terrifying. I haven't taken it since I was 18 (I'm 26 now) DlovesD- Have you talked to a dermatologist for alternatives?

That's a good suggestion Kim! I actually think my anxiety is related to it, because i didnt have it when i had my non hormonal IUD. Maybe I'll see a dermatologist and let them know I plan to get off & see what they say I can do in terms of preventing a massive breakout!

When I stopped taking BC pill, I just stopped, no real thought to it. I have put on weight since, but I don't think that has anything to do with it. I basically had no side effects that I can remember.

I went off it (prone to blood clots) and got an IUD, acne got a little worse, but it's mostly ok when I use acne face wash, much less crazy emotional swings and went back to having horrible periods, but with the IUD now I don;t get them at all. Smiley smile Mary Kay velocity face stuff works well for me with the acne.

I got acne, but not until 6 months after I was off. And it's worse than it was when I went on it. (I didn't go on for acne.) can't go back on for side effect reasons, but Clinic's acne system has helped the most.

DlovesD, how did you like the IUD? I am considering switching to that from the pill.

I was on Yasmin for about 8 years for PCOS. I gained a lot of weight while I was on it (went from about 150 to almost 200 over those 8 years!), but it kept my acne at bay and made my periods easier. I tried ortho tricyclin first and it was HORRIBLE (even the "low" version)--gave me morning sickness one week a month.

I went off the pill two years ago in preparation for surgery. You just stop taking it--there's no special way to go off it. My acne did come back (although it hasn't been that bad since Accutane), but I was otherwise fine. Did lose about 25 lbs, just 25 to go before I'm back to where I started! Now I have Mirena, and I love it.

You should NOT stay on a pill that makes you so sick! Your doctor should be finding another pill for you to try. When I had morning sickness, my doctor switched me when I told her. And when I wanted to try a lower dose hormone pill (Yaz), she let me try that (and switched me back when I preferred Yasmin).
