Advice from Turkish brides: henna night

Leila, on April 6, 2021 at 7:14 PM Posted in Planning 0 2

I am engaged and planning to elope in June. Covid safety is very important to me as I have lost many family members to it this past year. In addition to that, my fiancé and I are very shy, private people and would like to have a ceremony just for us. We are planning to tell people after we are married and then have our wedding “reception” on the anniversary of our marriage because hopefully by then it will be much safer to have a large party where everyone can be invited.

My question is: Can I have a henna night before the reception/anniversary party even though I will already be married by then? I am half turkish, I used to spend every summer in Turkey as all of my dads side is there. I’ve gone to many henna nights for cousins and family friends and I know my Turkish family would love it if I had one. The first thing my dad asked when I told him I was engaged was when the henna night would be. I would like to have one where I can include my MIL and sisters in law as well as my family from Turkey, but I also don’t want to commit any faux pas. I would really appreciate some feedback. Thank you!

I lived in Izmir for a few years, it was amazing!

I am thinking that since henna night is your cultural tradition, you can modify it how you want to celebrate. These things are adaptable and from what I remember (I got to go to one but it was over 20 years ago) there didn’t seem to be anything I was told not to do that would be disrespectful or anything. It’s wonderful that you want to carry on the tradition.

Can you ask your Turkish family what they think? They'd be the best people to check with!
