Affordable wedding cake options - anyone had experience?

Michaila, on July 1, 2019 at 12:54 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 1 22

So we're on a super tight budget but I still want a cake. I'm looking at possibly Walmart, Fry's, maybe Costco (but I want a tiered look and yes I did see that $50 one that someone did that's been floating around online but there's no tutorial!). Other grocery stores in my area are Basha's, Whole Foods, Sprouts, Albertson's, and Safeway.

I'm trying to keep it around $100 - $150 for about 100 people. We will also have a chocolate fountain set up (my mom already has one from my graduation party) because my sister has Celiac and can't have cake so we'll have that set up with strawberries and marshmallows and rice crispies or something like that (all gluten free things to dip) so it's not like cake will be the only dessert.

Walmart can do a 3 tier with a fancy filling decorated for 134 people for $150, which isn't bad. But I don't know how I feel about a Walmart wedding cake...(not sure why a Fry's or Costco cake is better to me than Walmart but somehow it is. Haven't been able to meet with a baker at Fry's yet to ask about pricing though)

Anybody use a grocery store for their wedding cake that can give me some guidance?

Oh yes I considered the Walmart one too! However I ended up not considering it when I found they don't deliver. But it's a good idea because they look nice and at the end of the day they're cheaper and cake is cake aha

Sam’s club does good wedding cakes and they taste really good not sure of prices though. Only downside is that you have to pick up your cake.

You could consider fake tier's aside from your top tier. Some bakery's with make the cake out of cardboard or foam with a editable top section. Then purchase sheet cakes to serve to your guest. This will save a significant amount. It doesn't hurt to ask any of the bakery's when pricing them if it's an option!

We looked into Costco after being totally shocked at the cake price we were quoted at a local bakery. Unfortunately, they don't do tiered cakes so if that's what you're wanting, they won't fit the bill.

Make sure you shop around! We were initially quoted $650 for a small, two tier cake and 2 sheet cakes to feed 150 people. Very simple design, not crazy flavors or fillings. We found another bakery willing to do the exact same thing, with free delivery, for $230.

This is from Walmart, minus the candles and 21 topper that we did for my daughters 21st birthday. It tasted fine, it was $ 140 and it you can order them with 48 hours notice. It was pretty. You can pick them up the night before or even at 8 am when they open the bakery. It comes in a giant cardboard box with fold in handles.

Our baker that’s making our cupcakes for guests is also making our wedding cake. We didn’t want anything special or crazy big however still wanted something bigger than a cupcake lol. So she is making us a smash cake. Just whatever flavor we want inside and doing our favorite icing buttercream outside. Only 20$ for our wedding cake! 😁

I have no issue with a Walmart wedding cake and it is likely what we'll get. It's just cake. It will look pretty and be eaten. We're not really picky about the cake in general.

You could do a small tiered cutting cake and then serve the Costco sheet cake. They’ll cut it up and plate it out of sight of the guests and no one will notice. We had planned on doing that but ended up doing a small cutting cake and serving cupcakes from a local bakery for roughly the same price.

Any local small mom and pop bakeries in your area? A lot of them are very affordable.

We're doing a small gluten free cutting cake from a celiac friendly bakery and serving Costco sheet cake to the guests that dont have dietary issues. I cant have the Costco cake but FH and my family said it was fantastic!

    Hey girl,

Have you considered having a cupcake wedding cake? You could still have a top tier wedding cake for you and your partner, but then you could have multiple other tiers lined with multiple flavors of cupcakes. Just a thought! Smiley smile

Why not just buy similar designed cakes in different sizes and stack them yourself? I found this article that gives you a general idea of how many people the different sizes will feed that may help with your decision. Or you can always get a small cake for you and FH to cut and have a larger sheet cake in the back to serve guests.

Im not sure if publix is only here in the south or nationwide but their cakes are really good and we are going with either them or Walmart. The publix cake is about $150 for the 3 tier one. This is the cake we decided on.

I have celiac so we are doing a very small 2 tiered gluten free cake for cutting and then serving a regular sheet cake for the guests. It's what my FH's cousin did and it worked out really great for her.

My mom is baking ours. It will be a gluten-free dairy-free cake to accommodate, well, me. Smiley winking She is super talented, the venue is cool with it, and we're saving a ton of money!

My soon to be sister in law got hers from a local Hyvee it was four tiers and very intricate for about 300 dollars it tasted good no one will know where the cake comes from unless you tell them it's not a big deal. Weddings are expensive!
