Affordable wedding cake recommendations!

Meg, on August 5, 2020 at 1:21 PM Posted in Pennsylvania Planning 0 12

Hey guys! So my fiancée and I are having a small winter wedding (with just immediate family) and a big reception in April 2021 for the rest of the family and a couple close friends because of COVID. I was able to get a one tier cake for our ceremony at a reasonable price, but the price skyrockets when you're trying to feed around 80 people. I've looked into Walmart cakes but I'm not sure about their quality (they look real pretty though!). Does anyone have any ideas on how to make it more affordable or any recommendations on some family run bakeries in or near Harrisburg, PA that would be within our cake budget (less than $200)? I'm not picky about tiered cakes and would more than willingly go for cupcakes as long as the pricing is reasonable. I'm just trying to keep our entire reception budget around $2000.

I heard that Costco has returned their sheet cakes so you could just get a sheet cake and have it cut up in the back and served

Browse the vendor tab at the top of the page. Also Instagram has local vendor contacts.

I've heard that Costco has good cakes for cheap! I would also check Walmart. If you're concerned about quality, you could always buy a small one to do a taste test first.

    Hi Lisa,

Do you think Costco would let me order even if I don't have a membership?

Thanks Melle! Do you know if Costco would let me order without a membership? And any idea if they would let me do a tasting?

I would go the cupcake option. Safeway has 24 cupcakes for $15 if you got 4 packs of 24 youd have 96 cupcakes which would cost $60.

Walkmart cakes are tasty but I have been burned by their lack of spelling lol. I have heard Sam's club does tiered cakes too. Have you considered a small cake for you two and cupcakes for guests? Also, call around as I know some cake places around me can be hecka expensive but the one I found was actually a good price. Also, do an instagram search for home bakers as some times they charge cheaper and still do lovely work. I think for me I did #tampabaker or something to that effect. I decided to splurge but one lady I was looking at would have charged me $125 for a two tier cake and for set up and delivery to the venue.

That is a good question - they might have a short trial membership that you can do, and you could just use it to order the cake? It couldn't hurt to ask! I would also recommend checking the price of a Costco membership + the price of their cake, and compare that total to the price of a cake from a different bakery that has no membership fee. It might end being cheaper to pay for the membership and the cake through Costco (or it might not be cheaper, in which case I'd recommend getting the cake from somewhere else). In any case, it never hurts to ask and compare options!

Hey all! Thanks for all the suggestions. So I spent a week looking at (and tasting!) the cakes at my local grocery stores and I've decided to go with Wegman's sheet cakes. I might still get a show cake for the cake cutting, just for the pictures but still haven't decided yet. What do you guys think about just using the sheet cake for the cake cutting (I'm planning to have it decorated)? Has anyone ever done that before?
