African American Bride Specific - Hair Updo Help

Sieya, on January 3, 2019 at 5:33 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 12

Hi Black Brides! (Or other brides that are well-versed in black hair).

I'm working on deciding on my hair for my wedding, and I'm wondering if anyone has advice for the hair predicament I'm in. I have a long-standing hairstylist I go to here in LA for my weaves, I typically do a sew-in with minimal leave out of my own hair. However, I don't really like her styling services (think the super crunchy curls). I want to do a loose updo for the wedding, and am wary of doing a wig or a closure on top because i live in Southern California and I'm afraid the bright sun will make it look very "wiggy" in photos.

I'm struggling finding pictures online of black brides with updos that I like for myself. While there are a lot of beautiful structured ones, my wedding is more bohemian so I don't want anything too structured. I'm posting non-black examples I've found of hairstyles I like below to give you an idea of the vibe:

With a front like this but maybe with a side part. So you get it, loose tendrils etc.

Ok, now that you have the background..I'm looking for advice about the following questions.

1) Is it possible to do a loose updo like this with weave including a very minimal amount my own leave out (essentially only where the part is)? Will the tendrils hanging look weird if I try that?

2) Do you think I'd need a closure to implement the look I'm going for?

3) Do you have any photos of black brides with loose updos as inspiration? Google and Pinterest have not been fruitful for me.

If you have advice about how to best implement this, let me know. I think might to have to get the install done by my normal stylist and maybe find a white woman to do the updo styling. Seems like there are no black bridal stylists or I'm not sure of what to search for.

Thank you!!

I think a sew in with a frontal maybe a good option or a messy bun

Try knotless crochet! Also a good hairstyle for honeymoon. It is very versatile.

To go for that look I think you should definitely consider a full head with a closure. From what I hear, a frontal can be very temperamental and may be a lot of maintenance especially if you plan on going on your honeymoon right after.

I’m looking for exactly the same thing. A lose curl look with a short tiara 1/2 up 1/2 down. The wedding will be my first time trying a closure and I’m still reeeeeally nervous about it lol. I usually do minimal leave out too BUT I’m natural and I refuse to have pictures of me leaving the reception looking crazy in July haha. So I researched alottttt of diff stylist... one is doing my install I haven’t booked him yet but his work is amazing and his closures look really natural and a diff stylist is good at soft updos (she’s a black stylist but has worked on a lot of diff hair and does a lot of photo shoots & also happens to be a long time friend who was invited to the wedding anyways). You just have to find the right person to do it.. ive seen closures and frontals look wig-ish & I’m not a fan so I know what you mean lol.

I’m following this. I have yet to figure out my hair style for the wedding or find a hair stylist. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to wear my natural hair or wear a crochet style. Wear it up or down, straight or curly. I’m leaning towards an updo but not sure of the exact style. I’ve worn a sew-in once and took it out within a few days. It was too tight and uncomfortable. I’d prefer crochets but crochets typically don’t give that natural look. Does knotless crochets look more natural?

Knotless crochet can look really natural if it’s done correctly. Without having much leave out like around your entire crown I’m not sure how well the up do will work unless you have like 360 lace wigs. Especially because you want to look so natural. I just did a sew in with a closure and flowey curls because I was so afraid of looking like wigzilla lol! I would say do a few trails with people because the last thing you’ll want is someone seeing tracks in the back lol! Good luck!!

Girl I am having the same exact problem. We r going to Jamacia right after the wedding and I do not want to spend hundreds on hair to have it ruined by any water activities we do. So I think Im going to have my stylist create a lace front wig for wedding. That way I can put on a cheap one for any water activities we do and still have the expensive one for wedding and everything else. Now I have had a sew in put into an updo and honestly Caucasian styles do the best updos. I went to a military ball and had my stylist do my weave then had another stylist do the updo.

I feel you girl! That hairstyle you described sounds really pretty. My best friend did a closure for the first time in her wedding last year. She got it installed the day before so there was no turning back. I've never used one before either. For my friend it ended up looking pretty good, but I'm like you and I'd be so nervous for myself that I'd look a mess... Let me know how yours turns out.

Thanks for the feedback girl. Did you have leave out when you did the updo for the military ball? Did it look good?

I might have to get a caucasian stylist too, but I'm not sure if they know how to properly blend my hair, etc. if I decide to keep some out.

Thank you! I was thinking it might have to be a closure too, it looked ok for my best friend's wedding last year but I've seen some questionable ones. I'll do some more research Smiley smile
