After the wedding....check cashing

Maltese, on June 19, 2015 at 11:05 AM Posted in Married Life 0 32

Ok ladies...I've got a question. In regards to the check cashing, most were made out to DH's First Name AND my name and last name. But I go by a nickname that most people use thats not my legal name. I have also yet to change my last name and am waiting for the certified copy of the marriage license. We also have procrastinated and do not yet have a joint bank account. I've never had any problems depositing money made out to Nickname MaidenName in the past but am wondering how it works with this situation.

We're just putting them all into his account since once my name legally changes we're combining accounts anyway.

Are you trying to deposit to your account or his account? Honestly in your situation, I'd put it in his and then transfer anything to you. Or maybe this is a perfect opportunity to open one together! Unless your bank is very casual (some are) you won't be able to cash checks to you with your new name until you have ID

Well this pertains to the nickname bit, i always write the rent check out to my landlord as debbie but i am assuming that her bank account is debora so if its something like that i don't think that would be an issue. as for it having both names one of you maybe able to just sign it over to the other person, i have signed a check over to my brother inlaw before so he could cash it for me.

eta: i didnt see the response to the nickname/maiden name

My daughter is a financial service rep. and she helped us deposit the checks into my checking account that doesn't have DH name on it yet. BUT she did say if you just write on the back of the check "for deposit only" and the account number it's going into a signature to endorse the check isn't even needed.

Sometimes people don't use my hyphenated last name and only use his and they still cash it. And my old boss used to write Kim and they still cashed her checks as well.

Oh I totally know this will happen to me, bc it does for EVERYTHING, almost no one knows my real name. At the shower, even people who did know it, made checks payable to "Jenn".

I have check printing software at work, so I re-created two of the checks and just stapled the two together in case anything ever came up.

It's ok. Just endorse it exactly as it's written on the check. Depositing money is almost never an issue; double-endorse it if you think it might be a problem, meaning endorse it as it's written, then underneath that, endorse it with the name that's on the bank account.

    It will be ok.

I took the checks, unsigned, over to my husband's bank. I'm not on his account and my name hasn't changed.

They just took my ID and I signed my current legal name. Some banks want you to sign the name on the check. Just sign them when you get there and both of you need to go to whichever bank you choose.

Ask your bank on their policy. It varies between banks.

Depositing=usually no problem no matter what the name. Cashing is another story.

This is why I always make wedding gift checks out to "Brides name or Groom's name." That way they can do what they want with them with the least amount of hassle.

I use Wells Fargo and I have deposited checks written out to just DH for the past 3 years without any sort of issue at the ATM. He's in sales so he gets 2 pay checks a week- one for base and one for commission, so I have more then several occasions put one of his into my account to pay bills. It was easier then him depositing it and then giving me the money. I have also deposited checks written out to my daughter. Same last name, but she doesn't have her account there so they have no idea if she's my daughter or someone else.

So we only got two checks. One was just made out to our firsts names so that was no problem. The other one was made out to Genny & DH with my last name crossed out and his written above it. I am not changing my last name so I didn't know if they were going to take it. It was fine though, the teller didn't even say anything

The plan pretty much is to deposit them into his account (our accounts are also at different banks). He wants to wait to open the joint until I change my name and thinks it will be easier then having to open it and then change the name and I'm fine with that.

I'm trying to tell him what my bank pretty much told me: That when money goes into an account it really doesn't matter who's name is on the check and they won't be too interested in it, where they get concerned is when money comes out of the account.

I was worried about this when DH and I were depositing our checks into his account. The ones that were made out to Mr. and Mrs. we both signed. The ones that were made out to me I signed, the ones made out to both our names ( my maiden name) We both signed. I was worried we would have an issue but we didn't. So I think you should be OK if you both sign it if it has two names on it.

In response to what Moxie said, I used to work at a bank and I do not recommend putting your account number anywhere on a check. Anything you deposit in your bank, whoever the issuer of the check is, can see what you have written on the check when they go and check the image of the deposited check. I am not saying the people who came to your wedding aren't trustworthy, but I would not want my account number out there floating around.

How my DH and I handled it, was I signed first, using the new last name, then he signed it, and then deposited it into his account. Now some bank require both people to be on the account in order to deposit the checks into it. I would just check with your bank and ask them how to handle it.

I have never had a problem with checks that say Chrissy when my name is Christine. I hope that helps!

I spoke to a teller at the bank since a lot of people wrote it to what my married name will be, they said I can just simply sign it with my husband's signature on the back as well. Every bank has different rules because I know of a bride that had to sign it in her maiden name, married name, and her husband's name too.

Nick had to open up a checking account in just his last name so we could deposit checks there for the wedding.,

I had a check made out to Erin instead of Emily and it still worked. Just make sure you save all the checks!
