Against the kissing bells?

Megan, on December 20, 2010 at 12:18 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 27

So I hate the idea of kissing bells so we're not getting them, but did anyone who was against this tradition have a way of letting people know they didn't want to do it?

Is there anybody who is expecting it that you have to let them know or putting up a stink about not having them? We aren't doing it either, I don't think people will necessarily think its odd..i don't think i've been to a wedding with them, but if i was they didn't really get used.

We had our MC's announce that there would be no clinking of glasses for kissing, but in order to have us kiss you have to come up and share the story how you met your spouse or proposed.

Obviously if you don't put bells out, there won't be bell ringing. Instead, guests like to tap their glasses. Just a warning!

@ Nicole, Guests ring bells that are at the table when they want you to kiss. It sounds cute, but all you will hear is bell ringing. LOL

My brother and his wife had it so if you clinked glasses that each time a couples name would be drawn and they would kiss on the dance floor and the bride and groom would mimic it. Was a fun sort of game.

I've been to tons of weddings and have never seen this done before. Maybe it's a regional tradition. Anyhow, I think it would be quite annoying actually. I also don't think anyone would notice it's missing, especially if their anything like me and had not seen it done before

Well we aren't buying them... we've been extremely up front about this. The clinking of the glasses I know can't be avoided, so I guess that's how I should've asked the question. lol How would you suggest we take care of this? I like the ideas so far. Smiley smile

As for the clinking of glasses, if anyone plans on doing that, i'd check with your venue first, some places don't allow that (they don't want glasses inadvertently getting smashed)

I've never been to a wedding with the kissing bells and have never noticed a glass clinking with the exception of getting people's attention for toasts.

You can always blame the venue- they don't allow clinking of glasses because of possible damage...

Honestly, ive only seen the clinking of the glasses at wedding and have never been to a wedding with actual bells. I dont think you need to say anything. guests will figure it out soon enough and will quickly resort to clinking glasses if they choose-and like you said, that cant be avoided.

@ Megan B/OP (there are two of you now! Altough you spell your names differently)

We didn't have ANY glass clinking. Our MC's went over the 'house rules' so to speak.

    1) No Smoking in the hall

    2) Bar is closed during super

    3) No clinking of the glasses, instead we're going to have INSERT ALTERNATIVE. Anyone caught clinking, will have to stand up and kiss their date/spouse.

    4) Designated drivers are provided.

    etc.

We're having the DJ annouce instead of clinking the glasses guests have to stand up and sing a song with the word "love" in it and no repeats, in order for us to kiss.

Danielle- I love that idea... but my family is a family of musicians- We'd be making out the entire time! I'll be saving that for the hotel later Smiley tongue

Danielle, a whole song, or a just a passage? That could get long lol, especially if you have people that have musical backgrounds and don't care about getting up and singing in front of people (both mine and FH are and have musically inclined family and he and I are as well.) So that really wouldn't work for us! I thought about the bells because I'd rather hear bells then "clank clank clank..." or "clink, clink, clink, smash." Every wedding I've ever been to has had glass clinking. After the first three times, usually, people get tired of it. Especially if all the bride and groom do is stand up, give each other a peck, and then sit down again... or just shake their heads no more.

I have the kissing bells. We are using them and have the place cards on top of them where the heart shape is. It is also a favor for the guests.

I am giving up a lot of the traditional things. I do not want the kissing bells, garter, or flower toss. Most of the couples at our wedding are already married and those who are not avoid the boquet. So we are just skipping it and enjoying our time with our guests! I love the idea of making them kiss if they clink the glass!!
