Airbrush Makeup Vs Traditional

Nina, on June 27, 2021 at 9:14 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 17

Hello Fellow Brides! Are you going to do airbrush or traditional makeup for your big day, and why? I've never done airbrush before, so wasn't sure if there was much more of a benefit over traditional. Thank you all!

So, I asked my makeup artist about this, and here is what she told me!

It does look immaculate, and it also does well under extreme heat/lights/photographs well. There is a reason many film professionals prefer it.

THAT SAID. I am not convinced that it lasts as well over time as regular makeup does. You can't use a setting spray with airbrush makeup, so I suspect it won't last as well.

So, you might look beautiful for your earlier photos, but look less so for your later photos.

For those reasons, I'm going with traditional makeup - I've tried so many different foundation formulas and I know which ones photograph nicely on me and so I'm comfortable going with one of those, with a primer underneath, and a setting spray over the top.

Traditional all the way. You use primer and setting spray to keep it in place for hours (it should last into the next day without needing a touch up). Airbrush is intended for makeup that has to be removed quickly.

I prefer airbrush. It’s always looked waaaay better on me, lasts much longer, and lasts better through heat and humidity. I have oily portions on my face, and it tends to break down traditional makeup.

I’m going with airbrush simply because that’s what the makeup artists I choose offer. I don’t really have a preference either way but did like how it looked during my trial and they are able to use primers just as an FYI.

I did airbrush and was so happy I did. It lasted all days and night in the heat.

You bring up a very good point. If you are getting married in the summer or in a hot or humid climate, airbrush will definitely hold up to the heat and humidity better, and will last longer! If you are getting married in the cooler months of spring or fall, or winter, plus you have dry skin, traditional make up may work better for you.

I’m doing airbrush specifically because I’m feeling married on the beach in the early summer so it is supposed to hold to better

I asked my MUA the same question and they decided I should do traditional. Had my trail a few months ago and I like how the traditional make up look good on me and it holds up for hours so that’s what I’m going with. Some of my bridesmaids have done airbrush and prefer airbrush so our bridal party will have a mix of both

I'm just going to do makeup and not airbrush because I want to look flawless thru out the day and night pics will be taken alot. Plus our wedding is in the summer and I would not like to have makeup drama

For what it’s worth, I did my own makeup because I wanted to look myself on my wedding day. When I was contemplating the $200+ it was going to cost to hire someone, my photographer recommended me not to do it so instead I just bought a ton of really expensive makeup and did it myself. I spent the same amount of money as I would have spent on the makeup artist and got to practice doing it exactly how I wanted it. Airbrush always just feels thick and gross to me IMO. But if you don’t live in a humid area it might not bother you as much. 💕

Really?? That’s so strange. Airbrush makeup should always feel weightless on your skin. Unlike regular makeup, it goes on suuuuuuper thin. Perhaps the person applying it didn’t know what they were doing? Also, airbrush holds up BETTER in humid climates.

I’m going with traditional because it’s a preference. With airbrush makeup, you want to consider your skin type and texture. It’s not very great if you have dry skin or even too oily. Additionally, if your skin is too textured, you might not achieve the look you’re hoping for. If you are using a skilled professional makeup artist, then they will be able to make your traditional makeup look flawless. But they’ll know how to work with your skin type, they’ll perform proper skin prep (even before using primer) , they’ll use quality products/brushes and have good makeup application techniques to make it last.

I actually just did my trial and she did traditional. It was great and it literally lasted all day. No touch ups or anything. I've done a few photoshoots and needed make up on a film set before and it was always traditional. Never had an issue. I've never used airbrush either but in all honesty, I'd rather stick to what I know.

Wow, thank you all so much for your feedback! I have a lot to consider. I've reached out to about five makeup artists just to get an idea on quotes, and it looks like the majority of them do the airbrush, but some offer both services. Depending on who I choose, I might ask to do a spot check with the airbrush to see how it holds up next to traditional. Thank you all for the guidance!

I did two trials, the first with airbrush and the second traditional (different artists). Maybe the airbrush one just didn't know what she was doing, but IT. WAS. AWFUL. I paid $200 for that damn trial and it looked like I had sponge paint on my face, I could literally see the speckles on my nose. And don't even get me started on how she did my eyes... my fiance took one look at me afterwards and said, "Um..." Smiley ups

Thank god the second artist was way better because I had a destination wedding in a small mountain town and there were literally no other artists to choose from.
